U.S. seeks to defuse spat with India

Preeth Bharara seems to be high on steroids - he charged 49 russian diplomats on health care fraud earlier this month - the only difference none of them were handcuffed - other than 11 all the others were released.

There seems to be differences between the DA and the state department. Preeth Bharara seems to be going out of his way to prove his loyalties.

He's a govt. official who is doing his job, something Indians are't used to:coffee:

It just show the immature thought process prevalent in the political circles in Delhi. Instead of using backdoor channels to sort this matter, India has chosen to escalate this issue and made it next to impossible for US to give any kind of concession.

Its sad that people are actually buying the conspiracy theories. This incident is making Indians look like jokers, totally unprofessional and immature!

Its not a conspiracy theory if you bother to think about it and try to connect the dots .. but everything you disbelieve is a conspiracy theory which should be rediculed , unfortunately many of the supposed conspiracy theories have been proven to be true...

2 months after sangeeta gets employed, her father gets employed in the U.S Embassy ( co-incidence ) ?

He's a govt. official who is doing his job, something Indians are't used to:coffee:

The white house/U.S govt was never informed nor even aware of the arrest (washington post) ,you should be stop being ignorant...
do you consider all Indian govt. servants to be corrupt morons ?

That's a stupid assumption. Doesn't take away from the fact that he's going ape on various diplomats of different countries.

anyways, the whole brouhaha is about the treatment meted out to a diplomat and not exactly about the Us legal standings.

Read my previous post for the reasons i posted for the entrapment

No....the treatment meted out to her is insulting to the country, its not about an individual anymore..
Countries often save their fellow country men weather they are good or bad , Italy,Russia,England,U.S the examples are many ... Often overseas US soldiers have been whisked away to safety after they were involved in Rape/murder of locals , often angering the locals ... You should read Niruapamo Rao's tweets.. she made 8 points...quiet Brilliant

I agree that India should stand by Devyani. However, to expect US to bend over backwards and "apologize" and "release" her is out of question. Like I said earlier, India has over played its hand in this situation.

And quite frankly India is not US. It is naive on India's part to try and act the way US acts in similar situation.

incorrect , India has plenty of friends and U.S has a lot to loose here . U.S just 3 days ago lost a $4billion fighter deal with Brazil because of NSA spying. Not saying it wont damage India a lot , but it will cause huge problems for U.S . Already we are hearing American Corporate Lobbyists trying to get the marshals suspended

I never said US has nothing to lose, just that India has a lot more to lose than US if it decides to follow this path.

It's an exaggeration to state that US lost the Brazil deal due to NSA spying. Lobbyists will do their job, that is what they are paid for.

Do you really think White House is going to be informed every time a diplomat is arrested? I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but India is not really that high on the list of important nations.
Had it been China, Japan or Russia that might have happened, not for an Indian Deputy Counsel General though.

Nations have to stand up to Bullying , if you bend over backwards , they will only **** more...
NO its not Naive , IF Ecuador can give a middle finger to U.S then India should not ? we should cow down in fear ?

And that is still part of his job description. Invalid argument.

If that is the case then Indians should stop coming up with ridiculous conspiracy theories. Even if she was treated in way that does not meet India's high expectations, it still mean that she'll be allowed to go free for the visa fraud as the Indians are demanding.

Oh no, India should try and prove how big a world player India is by making ridiculous demands from the US. You'll find out very quickly where you really stand!

I cant keep spoon feeding you with links i already told you, its in the Washington post , this is white house officials own statement and former white house officials have also stated that , that they should be informed before a senior diplomat is arrested, because its a recipe for an international incident . There is a procedure for an arrest and a formal courtasy established to inform the Embessy of an arrest..

Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one....your incompetence and incapability to Analyse an incident is rather stupid and frankly immature.. Shed that intentional ignorance.

Read the "should" in that statement. It is not required, but it is a suggestion as a matter of good policy.

Since, US feels it should have been more courteous, Sec State Kerry has already expressed regret for this incident. Apparently, that is not enough for the Indians.

Instead they're clamoring for a complete pardon for Devyani, undermining the US legal system. Breaking news for you, even President Obama can not let Devyani go free now that the case is in a US Court.

You can go ahead and pretend to be smart and call me stupid, but the fact remains that Indians have over played their cards in this incident and this will not augur well for future India-US relations.

Yes it is matter of good policy, it was a huge mistake on part of U.S to not follow it as proved by the regretting statements from Kerry , The regret is on the incident itself and not on the way Devyani was treated . The world does not work on shades of black and white and don't hold your breath on US legal system doing anything to Devyani . The looser is U.S govt in the end ,Not India , U.S Govt. is loosing support and allies all over the world and India is increasingly becoming less dependent on the U.S. Even when it comes to weapon sales U.S is loosing clout to other nations despite the recent deals . U.S is not the only country out there , technology and resources are everywhere if U.S dont want to provide..there are other waiting in line

U.S has been undermining legal systems all over the world there are countless examples. Every country stand up completely to back their citizens weather they succeed or not. Your views prove that you lack any historical references when making arguements ....

Am not pretending to be smart , you are being stupid , instead of making logical replies your replies are more jingoistic and completely lack substance ... India has not overplayed, India should treat U.S exactly the way they treat us ...NO more boot-licking and preferential treatment.

Oh no, India should try and prove how big a world player India is by making ridiculous demands from the US. You'll find out very quickly where you really stand!

It is right if US-India relation damage it will cause problem to both countries. But We dont need US for our future.US done this similar boasting when India's nuclear test in 1998.They sanctions us but fact is that this so called allies of US divided when issue is India.France a major player in EU and permanent security council member is in favour to India.Israel is also in favour to India.Russia give us support as usual.some other countries also support US.US sanctions didnt last 2 years even the help of Japan and Britian. Then they came here and give us nuclear deal.We not beg there.Do you know why?US and its stooges already realise .India can move economic ,militarily and techonologcally without help of US.
And you cant ignore in India in 2013 is very different than India in 2013.In this case ,If US against us.we have already back-up plan.May India get some initial set back in Afghanistan. But we can handle it lately, without damage. If this relation move forward ,it will both help US and India. If US ,the champion of democracy,is turn against India the world largest democracy in World and a rising power it will have some implication. But we can ignore US.

Who in their right mind from South Asia would pay 4500 USD as salary for a maid plus all the privileges of free food, diplomatic passport, free accommodation, free travel?

You think US embassies in Pakistan or India pay their local gardeners, drivers and other maids and servants lakhs of rupees per month as salaries?

Dont know about the gardeners or maids but the drivers surley taking in lakhs. from 75k to 180k

Khobragade gets exemption from personal appearance in US court

India and the U.S. may be moving towards a resolution of the stand-off over senior diplomat Devyani Khobragade’s case with the envoy getting exemption from personal appearance in a New York Court hearing visa fraud charges against her even as she got her accreditation to the UN headquarters.

Ms. Khobragade, who was arrested on December 12 in New York, had been transferred by the government to its mission to the UN with a view to giving her full diplomatic immunity. Her accreditation is expected to be followed by some paperwork at the US State Department for which India has already submitted the papers.

Simultaneously, her exemption from personal appearance in the court is a significant step towards a way out of the stand-off created by her arrest and strip search which had evoked a sharp reaction by the Indian government which has been pressing the US to drop the charges against her unconditionally.

The 39-year-old Ms. Khobragade, a 1999-batch IFS officer posted as Deputy Consul General in New York, was taken into custody on visa fraud charges as she was dropping her daughter to school before being released on a $250,000 bond after pleading not guilty in court.

Meanwhile, the U.S. embassy here has sought extension of today’s deadline for filing the visa and other key details of the Indians employed by it and its officers. This information includes salary being paid to domestic help employed by U.S. diplomats in India.
