TOKYO (Reuters) - The United States said on Thursday it was disappointed by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to a controversial shrine for the war dead, which had already prompted sharp rebukes from China and South Korea.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine for war dead on Thursday, seen by many as a symbol of Japan's World War Two militarism.

"Japan is a valued ally and friend. Nevertheless, the United States is disappointed that Japan's leadership has taken an action that will exacerbate tensions with Japan's neighbors," the U.S. embassy in Japan said in a statement.

The already unstable Asian peninsula was left even more jittery today after China and South Korea expressed outrage at Japan's Prime Minister visiting a shrine honouring his country's war dead.

China said the visit by Shinzo Abe was 'absolutely unacceptable to the Chinese people', while government officials in the South Korean capital, Seoul, told of their 'regret and anger'.

Analysts said they would not be surprised if North Korea also joined in the protests - although they cautioned that Kim Jong-Un's secretive country might not wish to join sides with South Korea in expressing outrage.

The US has reiterated time-and-again that they have a vested interest in maintaining 'peace and order' in the Asia-Pacific region. They never shut up about it. So it would reflect poorly on this commitment if they didn't take concrete actions against Japan's provocative and inflammatory antics.

Taiwan expresses its 'regret' at Japan PM's Yasukuni visit

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwan expressed "regret" over the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to a controversial shrine honoring Japanese soldiers who perished in World War II, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said yesterday.

Foreign Minister David Lin said the Taiwanese government is "extremely regretful" and cannot accept the move made by the Japanese prime minister, who visited Yasukuni Shrine yesterday morning.

The visit "hurts the feelings of people in neighbouring countries as well as Japan's ties with those countries," the minister said.

Lin called on the Japanese government to look squarely at historical facts, deeply reflect on them and work to develop friendly relations with other countries.

Abe visited the controversial shrine yesterday morning, one year after he took office. It was the first visit by a sitting Japanese prime minister since Junichiro Koizumi went to mark the end of WWII in 2006.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich on Thursday expressed regret over Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to the war-linked Yasukuni Shrine.

Lukashevich, director of the ministry's Information and Press Department, said in a statement that some forces in Japan have a different evaluation on the outcome of World War II from the understanding shared by the world.

While Lukashevich's remark was addressing the Yasukuni issue, it may have also been veiled criticism against Japan about Tokyo's territorial claim on a group of islands held by Russia. Moscow maintains its control over the islands is a result of the war.
