U.S. refused to sell F-16s to Bangladesh

We should understand the points in our defence budget. This budget reflects the allotments of salaries for soldiers and maintenance of equipments. Purchasing of new planes or frigates are not included in this budget.

1. That point above is correct. Major procurement programs are not reflected in the budget.

2. BD's financial health is sound - although it is nothing extraordinary. But we can afford spending US$ 4.00 blln or even more for our air force.

3. Obviously we understand acquisition of aircraft is not an isolated item; it is part of an air def system. In BD ground based air def will play an important role because of its compactness and size.

4. BD is not about to waste money in buying something for the shooting gallery of somebody. We want to be able to defend ourselves.

.
Yes, you may be right about prices of F-18s, and unlike China the private manufactures in the USA will not give any discount. But, BD will certainly not purchase 3 sq. of such prized aircraft. It could by only two sq. or less. But, consider the coming friction in the BoB. BD, Burma and India will be contesting for oil and gas there.

THe BoB is holding $500 billion worth of natural gas in our part. We cannot afford to lose all this by avoiding to spend a few billion dollars to buy weapons of necessity. We are buying all the naval hardwares like frigates, Corvettes, FACs, SSMs and others. The govt has already declared to purchase 4 submarines. With this purchases, BN will be second only to India, albeit, there will be a big difference between the two Navies. BD govt is taking time before it decides on what kind of mainstay fighter-planes it will buy.

There was already a showdown with Burma in 2008 whereby BN forced Burmese oil exploration team to leave. From a position of weakness, BD cannot pursue an independent BoB exploration policy. However fair it may be, india will certainly oppose any exploration in our own part of the sea, which they would claim as their own.

Eastwatch, are you sure about the bold line bro?? Somewhere I read the number is 6, while Wikipedia claims the number to be 3.

To intercept Russian Tu-142s over the North Sea, of course, as happened again just last week. And, in the context of Nato, to defend common airspace (you can't leave air defence of most of western european airspace [against Warsaw pact in the old days, against Russia today] to just a few western european nations e.g. German, France, Uk and Italy with smaller countries not contributing).

I have been reading about purchase of submarines for the last few years in different discussion forums. But, at the ceremony when Cox's Bazaar Airforce Base was opened for construction, the present PM specifically said about the necessity of building a 3D military and also the purchasing of submarines.

There is no mistake about this pronouncement. After this announcement I or someone else had opened a thread in this Forum and copy pasted the news. There were lively discussions.

I have found the news and am posting it for your review:

PM urges navy to be alert
Wed, Dec 29th, 2010 6:14 pm BdST

Chittagong, Dec 29 (bdnews24.com) — Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged the navy to remain alert and fend off any aggression on Bangladesh's waters.

"The navy will be developed further to stop intrusion of foreign ships," said Hasina on Wednesday.

Sheikh Hasina also said the government is considering inclusion of submarines.

The prime minister told a parade inspection, "The navy will be given state of the art training with modern equipment."

Hasina was addressing newly commissioned naval officers in the morning at the Bangladesh Naval Academy.

Later, prime minister also joined the commissioning of navy's new search and rescue vessel 'BNS Onushandhan'.

Two female officers and 32 other midshipmen received their commission at the passing out ceremony which also included four Palestinians.

The sword of honour, given for best all round performance, was awarded to Midshipman Nahiyan Baker Milky.

The navy chief, government officials, MPs and senior military officers and relatives of the new officers attended the ceremony.

Thanks for the beautiful picture of J-10B. Not only here, but I have read also in other discussion Forums that BAF officers want either J-10B or SU-30 for their mainstay fighters that BAF wants to purchase in the next 5 years.

The way things are going with Hartals, all that we'll need is Bamboo sticks.
You can't fly a mig through the streets anyways. Lolz.

Please do not forget indian pressure on this deal also........an other reason is that BD is friendly country with china

.
the U.S acts too arrogant in its dealings with small countries ....why not let Bangladeshis decide if they can afford or not ?
It's not about affordability! It's just that the limited number of high tech latest block F-16s they manufacture now have been reserved for Pakistan to fight the low tech Taliban!! :cheesy:

In the foreseeable future, we are not going to have any major war. We are lucky to be in such a geographical position. All we need to do is have enough gadgets that allows us not to be intimidated by the bigwigs in the area. For that we do not need jewels like F-16. What we need is some cheap ones that gets us through for another 10-15 years without major expenditure.

Who is going to attack us???........ India has no motive. We are not a resource reach country. They will never go for full fledged occupation. No country will. Only one we can fear is Myanmar. But then again, we surely are going to get international help if some of their generals go nuts and attack us. Even India will surely help out.

What we need is something that allows us to stave off any aggression for just a few months. No need to spend billions on expensive planes; and we also have to think about the operational cost. Anyway, BD people are not that aggressive, and would not support procurement of things that are unnecessary.

What we need is better foreign policy. Even, it will be better for us to spend the excess amount for building up a university solely for developing foreign policy experts. Trust me, it is going to pay out. If countries like Switzerland can go through major wars without a scratch, then why can't we.

Exactly

Why should US refuse to sell to BD?

It is just another aircraft as good or as bad as any other.

IF BD requires it, it should sell.
