U.S. refused to sell F-16s to Bangladesh

. .
Situation has changed. If chinease jets not available, then F16s from ME countries could be a good option.

.
If the U.S didn't sell, not a problem at all. Their are other vendors out there.

.
1.The original report regarding USA refusing sale of F 16 may have been a disinfo put out by AL govt of that time to justify buying Mig 29 from Russia. There was a lot of opposition to that from BAF. AL biz cartel have been charged with taking illegal commission, and even Sk Hasina has been implicated.

2. Now the choice is between MIG 35 and F 18. BD system being faster, BAF may receive the reply to IAF's Eurofighter even before IAF receives their aircraft!

3. Will not be too big a deal for BD to finance 3 sqns.

. .
BAF future a high low combination.
Mig-29/SU-30 and JF-17/Gripen, however gripen has american components so it could become sanctioned product.

FC-20 is out of question for a number of years though seems (I could be wrong) it wouldbe available for next export after Pakistan from 2016+ by that time improved JF-17 would already be there in form of BLK II/III

mujib43...3 Squadrons of US/Russian equipment would cost as much as $4 Billion that is out of question for BAF but it is time BAF retires A-5 Fantans with replacement of FC-1/JFT as I think Chinese support is good approx $360M for a squadron is too reasonable.

US planes are expensive. But, at $35million a piece 48 units of F-18 Hornets will cost around $1.7 billion, and not $4billion. Yet, it is a big sum of money, but today's Bangladesh can certainly afford these. Payment will not be made in one single year, I believe.

Do not also get misled by our defence budget of about $1.6 billion. This is for salaries and maintenance. Weapons are purchased according to our need and availability of foreign currency. It is unrelated to the defence budget which is spent in local currency. Weapons is something like purchasing rice from abroad. Rice purchasing is not covered in the budget. We pay in dollars and rice comes in. It is same with weapons.

BAF has not yet decided which planes it will induct. I have heard that it is also considering SU-30 or something better. Note that the present govt has better relations with Russia than it has with USA. As it was before, this time also USA may refuse to sell citing a case of poor BD.

eastwatch you are wrong, F-18E/F SH is not $35M the price tag is $55M+ with everything the price tag would reach 65/70M with F-18c/d variant would cost you more than $45m+ its not only the airframe add up other systems and weapons and other associated cost. PAF paid $3.1B for 18 F-16s.

Yes, you may be right about prices of F-18s, and unlike China the private manufactures in the USA will not give any discount. But, BD will certainly not purchase 3 sq. of such prized aircraft. It could by only two sq. or less. But, consider the coming friction in the BoB. BD, Burma and India will be contesting for oil and gas there.

THe BoB is holding $500 billion worth of natural gas in our part. We cannot afford to lose all this by avoiding to spend a few billion dollars to buy weapons of necessity. We are buying all the naval hardwares like frigates, Corvettes, FACs, SSMs and others. The govt has already declared to purchase 4 submarines. With this purchases, BN will be second only to India, albeit, there will be a big difference between the two Navies. BD govt is taking time before it decides on what kind of mainstay fighter-planes it will buy.

There was already a showdown with Burma in 2008 whereby BN forced Burmese oil exploration team to leave. From a position of weakness, BD cannot pursue an independent BoB exploration policy. However fair it may be, india will certainly oppose any exploration in our own part of the sea, which they would claim as their own.

yes MIG-35 will be a good option for the BAF. It cost 40-50 Million $ same as that of J10B and MIG-35 is better than J10B and if BAF goes for the MIG-35 may be in the future Russia may offer the 5Gen aircraft being developed by the MIG

.
su 27 or su 30 will be a good addition to our air force. However, mig 35 may be too costly for us right now

.
Yes we are aware, and thank you for your kind words. :undecided:

We should understand the points in our defence budget. This budget reflects the allotments of salaries for soldiers and maintenance of equipments. Purchasing of new planes or frigates are not included in this budget.

What modernization plans -if any - does the BAF have in store at the moment.

Nope. Judging from Bangladesh's recent development budget, BAF won't go under any modernization plan in some years to come.
