A major international naval exercise last month in and around the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea, led by the U.S. Navy with more than 30 other nations participating, located fewer than half of the practice mines laid at sea.

This outcome of the highly publicized military drills — not publicly known until now — underscores how difficult it may be for the United States and its partners to detect and incapacitate waterborne explosive devices that Iran has threatened to plant if its nuclear facilities come under attack.

Out of the 29 simulated mines that were dropped in the water, “I don’t think a great many were found,” retired Navy Capt. Robert O’Donnell, a former mine warfare director for his service, told the NewsHour. “It was probably around half or less.”

30 nations, for two weeks were specifically sweeping for 29 mines, in a scripted event, and found only half or less :what:

What would happen in the real war, against real mines, hundreds if not thousands of them, while receiving missiles, torpedoes and what not in the backside?

Bottom line, good luck with a successful mine sweeping during war. If Iran mines the Strait, it would be closed for good, and for quite some time. Hopefully West will change its intentions of the regime change in Iran, but it seems unlikely.

it means now usa and its alies will re think again and again to attack on iran and now iran have some upper hand

Then Iran should have full confidence that they can close the Straits right now without consequences in belief they can hit the ships that mines are able to hit.

It is very unlikely. Hopefully Iran chooses to let go of its quest for nuclear weapons capability. It loses if war starts.

If you are any wiser, you should take note -- that it is actually pretty good. Scripted or not. Exercises are for discoveries of deficiencies, renewal of current skills, discard of old ideas, and development of new ones. What make you think that a conflict will occur in time that Iran can take advantage of this?

The thing about mine is that we do not need to remove %100 of deployed, but only enough to have a clear path.

Drifting mines were occasionally used during World War I and World War II. However, they were more feared than effective.
Iran cannot produce enough mines to squander through drifting mines, which may be carried out of effective area by currents, and given the fact that everyone know where anchored mines will be deployed, it make mine hunting easier. And anchored mines pretty much fit into that 'scripted event' you mocked because they are -- what else -- fixed.

Iran can destroy the entire US navy.
America can't even beat Iraq.

American military is just target practise for Iran.
That's why the yanks don't want to mess with the mullahs.

Please see your shift stuporvisor for an appointment with the state shrink. That post is really way out of touch with reality.

Those more than halves remaining mines may be original one :P Iran navy is under threat now. Be careful and look around before putting your boats into the water. :P

No, it's just propaganda. If it was true they would never announce it publicly.
