U.S. Lags China on Hypersonic Weapons by Years, Raytheon CEO Says

The U.S. government is years behind China in the pursuit of so-called hypersonic weapons that bob and weave through the atmosphere at more than five times the speed of sound, Raytheon Technologies Corp.’s chief executive officer said Tuesday.

While the Pentagon has a number of hypersonic weapons programs in development and the U.S. understands the technology, China has “actually fielded hypersonic weapons,” Raytheon CEO Gregory Hayes said in an interview on Bloomberg Television’s “Balance of Power With David Westin.” “We are at least several years behind.”

The emerging, ultra-fast weapon systems have sparked concerns because of their potential to destabilize relations between the U.S., China and Russia. They may also become a front in the mounting competition between Beijing and Washington as the world’s two largest economies clash over trade, technology and humanitarian issues. Raytheon is developing a hypersonic cruise missile with the U.S. military.

Hypersonics capability is “the most destabilizing threat to the homeland,” Hayes said. “The time to react is very, very short.”

The CEO’s comments come after reports that China conducted two hypersonic weapons tests over the summer, including one of a so-called hypersonic glide vehicle. Launched from a missile or rocket, the craft separates and zips toward a target while maneuvering through the atmosphere, and Hayes said such weapons can reach speeds of 22,000 miles per hour.

“We have to have automated systems to defend the homeland, and we are focused on that,” he said in the interview.

Raytheon’s Missiles and Defense unit in September successfully test-fired a hypersonic cruise missile that can travel at speeds greater than Mach 5 as part of a development contract for the U.S. Air Force and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Defense Department’s advanced technology development agency.

“We will have weapons to challenge the adversaries but most importantly I think our focus is how do we develop counter-hypersonics,” Hayes asid. “That’s where the challenge will be.”

Raytheon shares were down 2.5% to $88.99 at 2:38 p.m. in New York after the company reported third-quarter earnings.

US used to have the capabilities. The technologies to create a space shuttle is quite similar to an orbital glider. Seems that US enginnering capabilities are entering terminal decay.

.
China is catching up to the US faster then the US thought it would. In 50 years time US will be a jungle like Brazil with latino rule and China will be light years ahead of US. Things just looking worse and worse for the US day by day.

Chinese engineering capabilities are advancing faster than everyone else. Year after year Chinese kids have been dominating in international math and science competitions. If China could send 10 teams they’d win top 9. On the other side, the US education system is eroded by political correctness. Affirmative action gives unfair advantage to incompetent people while depriving the opportunities for the real hard working talented ones. In the US a Chinese kid who scored 90 percentile in SAT is considered “average“ and would be denied by all privileged colleges. Guess what? In China, every kid is a Chinese :azn:

US is not interested in educating the peasants. Their public school system failed miserably. But they have one of world best private schools for the top 1%.

In "free" countries, everything is polarized. Even the education. Luckily China adopted universal education. I believe China will eventually win in the China-US competition due to the different routes. In 19th century, UK was elit education. Germany was univeral education.

You need to keep peasants stupid to the point of feeding them with opoids, and inculcating free sex, LGBT values to prevent a peasant revolt against the elites.

Why would the US collapse in 50-years? What is your logic based on?

What exactly is the rest of the world doing so great that the US isn't?

US has smart kids - its just that they're all victims of the yearly Purge - also referred to as High School Shootings.

The poor US kids are the victims of brainwashing, when the woke teachers are forcing them things like they can choose to be boys or they can choose to be girls. The teacher also tell poor kids that they must enjoy childhood.

Meanwhile the elites high schools rich kids are studying until 0200 morning everyday.

US is barely a nation. People with different races, different religions, different cultures are bonded together because of common interest. To some extent US is more fragile than India. When US loses its superpower status and can not absorb blood from other countries, the bond will loose.

I think 50 years is too pessimistic. Most of us will witness US disintegration.

That's how all progressive nations are. It's been like this throughout history.

Can't compare the US with India.

When US loses its superpower status and can not absorb blood from other countries, the bond will loose.
When exactly will that be? I mean they are the largest economy by far and are constantly growing.

How can you be so sure China will not disintegrate in the next 50-years?

We have 329 million Americans against 1.4 billion Chinese.

China will need to have a four times larger Nominal GDP to that of the US to be considered equal to the US. Currently, the US has around 40% larger Nominal GDP than China. The rest of the fully developed world is nowhere near. So, what exactly is the US collapse theory based on?

This Russian professor predicted US disintegration by 2010.

Diversity is progressive for a country? Really? Look at the world. Reality tells different stories.
China is one of most united countries because we are not bonded by interest but culture and blood. China went through very poor, very miserable period of times. We still stick together. Compared with China, US is like spoiled one.

To keep its present status, US has to maintain an absolutely dominant position in every field. Which is very costly and fragile. China doesn't have to surpass US in every field. China just needs to break through several spots. Domino falls will happen in US.
