I really dont think that we are looking to "win" in afghanistan. The target is to take out specific leaders and deal a great blow to the Al Qaeda infrastructure. That we have largely done. The succeeding Taliban is a mixed bag for us. Not all of them are our enemies and specific targets are still being eliminated ala Drone Strikes. I am sure we are in Pakistan for a very specific mission fully discussed with the military in Pakistan, and taking them on board. And I dont think this mission includes destabilizing Pakistan, which would be a massive mission and would require a massive intelligence budget. And that would be questioned here in the US as well.
U.S. needs 1300 houses in Islamabad (located far away from the Afghan border) to take Pakistani military on board????
Can't you just give the Pakistan military equipment they asked for to tackle down terrorists. It would be cheaper and less work for U.S. than acquiring 1300 houses in Pakistan's beautiful peaceful capital with not a Taliban or Al Qaeda in sight.
