U.S. defense and intelligence officials: China remains at least a decade behind America

The yankies are nervous. They keep looking over their shoulders and around locating our positions constantly.
The winning race driver always keep looking over his shoulder. :azn:

.
Only a decade? Boy they are giving mad props to China. I would have said two decades instead of one. Hell, I even have doubts sometimes whether today's Chinese military could take on the American forces involved in Desert Storm in 1991.

.
Ah..... they are trying to get more funding for US defence budget. Just some time ago they were saying China is at least 30 years behind, some even said 50 years behind. Now suddently it is at 10 years behind.

America lags well behind China in deep sea sub technology. China has Jiaolong. America does not have a deep sea sub.
Come on the US has deep sea vessels. How deep is deep now?

Even the French have a vessel that goes deeper than any US one. They have always been pretty good at it (Jacques Cousteau etc) and seem to always push things to the edge.
French Bathyscaphe Trieste – 11,000 m
China Jiaolong – 7,500 m

According to you China still needs a deep sea vessel since because since it can't go as deep as the French it isn't considered deep.

America lags well behind China in electric high speed train technology. China has been operating CRH380A since 2010. America still doesn't have trains like that.

That's because trains are very unpopular in the US due to the widespread use of air travel and the convenience of highways. High speed rail in the US is completely underused if not dead. I bet if you showed the below picture to most Americans showing where the "high speed" (if you can call it that) rail lines are they would be surprised to know they even existed. The vast majority of Americans born after WW2 have never been on a train in their lives (other than subways and local commuter rails)...but pretty much everyone has been on a plane or taken a trip on an interstate highway. Most would find that fact about trains shocking.

America lags well behind China in coal gasification AKA clean coal development. Clean coal turns coal into gas and produces a lot of pro plant CO2 in the process.

The skies of China are ALOT more polluted than the US from coal burning. That investment was an emergency necessity and I'm not surprised China is ahead. People are actually leaving the country due to air pollution. Nobody is leaving the US because of air pollution. You can see why the investment would be lagging.

America lags behind China in supercomputer. Tianhe-2 is the world's fastest supercomputer.

Supercomputers never stay the fastest for long. Somebody is always stringing more chips together to announce the fastest one. By the way Tianhe-2 gets its speed from thousands of Intel chips (US company).
Tianhe-2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"With 16,000 computer nodes, each comprising two Intel Ivy Bridge Xeon processors and three Xeon Phi chips, it represents the world's largest installation of Ivy Bridge and Xeon Phi chips, counting a total of 3,120,000 cores."

We were even further behind during korean war. We did not even have nuclear weapons then. So???

In the past 20 years, the United States has spent trillions of dollars to create and deploy the world's best military technology. It also has enacted laws and regulations aimed at keeping that technology away from potential adversaries such as Iran, North Korea and the nation that poses perhaps the most significant long-term threat to U.S. military supremacy, China.

China's efforts to obtain U.S. technology have tracked its accelerated defense buildup. The Chinese military budget - second only to America's - has soared to close to $200 billion.

President Xi Jinping is championing a renaissance aimed at China's asserting its dominance in the region and beyond. In recent weeks, Beijing has declared control over air space in the contested East China Sea and launched China's first rover mission to the moon.

IMMEDIATE THREAT

As China rises to challenge the United States as a power in the Pacific, American officials say Beijing is penetrating the U.S. defense industry in ways that not only compromise weapons systems but also enable it to secure some of the best and most dangerous technology. A classified Pentagon advisory-board report this year, for instance, asserted that Chinese hackers had gained access to plans for two dozen U.S. weapons systems, according to the Washington Post.

But the smuggling of technology such as radiation-hardened microchips out of America may present a more immediate challenge to the U.S. military, Reuters has found. If China hacks into a sensitive blueprint, years might pass before a weapon can be manufactured. Ready-made components and weapons systems can be - and are - used immediately.

Beijing says its efforts to modernize its military are above-board. "China has mainly relied on itself for research and development and manufacturing," the Chinese defense ministry said in a statement to Reuters. "China always complies with relevant laws and cooperation agreements and protects intellectual property rights."

How often the Chinese succeed at acquiring U.S.-made weaponry or components is unclear. U.S. government officials say they don't know, in part because the problem is too widespread and difficult to track. By its very definition, black market smuggling is hard to monitor and quantify. Quite often, sensitive U.S. technology is legally shipped to friendly nations and then immediately and illegally reshipped to China.

China also presents a special challenge: It is both the largest destination for legally exported American-made goods outside North America and the most or second-most frequent destination for smuggled U.S. technology. A 2010 classified Pentagon assessment showed a spike in legal shipments to China of "dual-use" technology - products that have civilian and military purposes, a person involved in the study said.

The technology products the Chinese military seeks tend to be miniaturized, and thus aren't easily identifiable to U.S. border agents - unlike drugs, for example. And trafficking in these goods isn't technically illegal until someone tries to export them.

"When you think about how many legitimate transactions go to a place like China, it makes it very difficult to track," said Craig Healy, a senior Homeland Security official who directs the U.S. export enforcement center.

Officially published U.S. estimates of how frequently American arms technology gets smuggled are incomplete. By one Pentagon calculation, suspicious queries to U.S. defense manufacturers by entities linked to China increased 88 percent from 2011 to 2012. The government won't disclose the number of cases that underlie that percentage.

U.S. defense and intelligence officials said that although they closely monitor the Chinese buildup, they believe China remains at least a decade behind America. "They still have a long way to go," said one senior U.S. defense official.

That means you kicked their asses when you guys were still poor.

Just imagine in 10 years time...

You can not measure the outcome of the war beforehand by the so-called xxx-year behind in technology and etc...

Afghanistan talibans were in cave level compared to the mighty U.S.

How about the outcome???

Mars is not interesting. It's too far away and you can't even see it at night. The moon is a lot closer and visible at night and sometimes even during the day. A manned mission to the moon can't even last a single day. A rover mission can last for decades, doesn't endanger astronauts, and costs a lot less, and can do everything a manned mission can do. :-)

I'm certain US is capable of sending rovers to the moon. But moon is not interesting because it cannot sustain life. But neither is mars. So to me, mars mission should be stopped ASAP.

Just one dacade! I think china still lag behind America more than 20 years, seriously!

Beside spending more money on Military R&D, also should improve the R&D environment, that's very important, and imporve the education system, what we need to do is much more than imagine of most of Chinese, if you go to lab and factory, check the test equipment and manufacturing equipment, and the component, you will kown, China still much lag behind the advanced countries, catching up with USA completely, do you think how long need? I guess, about 50 years.
I don't know following American in education is wise
