it's not about 'guts', it's about a nuclear threshold that nears quickly if ever the US get in a hot war with the Russians.

but they made it through the cold war, they'll manage through this too, in the end the US will have to back off here because why on earth are they supporting these horrible jihadists anyway ? Don't need the USA to provide it. Other countries already supply them. Usually Russian made or Chinese made.

Usually low altitudes they are a threat. Thats where helos are usually shot down. For example, the U.S. has yet to lose a fighter aircraft to MANPADs in Iraq or Afghanistan. Only helicopters.
