Tyagi is new HAL chairman - The Times of India
BANGALORE: R K Tyagi, CMD, Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd, who was appointed HAL chairman on Thursday, will succeed Ashok Nayak who retires on October 31.
The appointment comes even as the company deals with the suicide of Sqn Ldr (retd) Baldev Singh, director (corporate planning and marketing). His family and colleagues said work pressure had forced him to take the extreme step.
While Tyagi is an outsider to HAL, he has had stints at Pawan Hans and ONGC. He's a BE (electronics and telecommunication) from IIT Roorkee and an MBA (marketing). Prior to the Pawan Hans assignment, he was general manager and head, air logistics, ONGC, managing 20 helicopters.
Though Tyagi has experience in operations, he'd have to take care of drawing, design and manufacture which are HAL's core strengths.
The appointment of a chairman from outside is not because there is a change in policy, but because the company didn't have eligible candidates.
According to a senior official, "the unique situation had arisen because there was no candidate who had experience of being director for one year and two years of experience remaining before retirement."
"Not many promotions have happened over the years. Had promotions been given, this situation would not have arisen."
The official said, "An outsider running HAL is something of an issue. The outsider needs to have drawing, design and manufacturing experience as HAL is perhaps the only company doing all this under one roof in south-east Asia."
