RAHIM YAR KHAN: Two women – a mother and her daughter who are said to be mentally disabled – have been bound by chains for 15 years inside their house in Rahim Yar Khan, Geo News learnt on Sunday.

"My brother was killed 15 years ago, after which my mother and sister lost mental stability. My wife is also unwell and suffers from mouth cancer," said the son of the woman who runs a small tea stall in Liaquatpur's Thul Hamza area to earn a livelihood.

He said that he did not have the money to seek appropriate medical treatment for his mother and sister.

He said that when he did try to get medical treatment, it increased the financial burden on his family and forced him to chain his mother and sister inside the house.

He added that his younger brother also suffered from a mental illness since childhood.

Government officials took notice of the family's misfortunes as soon as the news aired on Geo News.

Tariq Mehmood Bukhari, the District Commission Officer in Rahim Yar Khan, said that health and social welfare teams have been dispatched to the area to assess the condition of the women and provide help in every possible way.

Speaking to Geo News, Managing Director Baitulmaal Barrister Abid Waheed Shaikh said that the district officer and director have been intimated and that the family will be contacted today.

"They (the women) appear to be mentally unstable, and one appears to have mouth cancer. We will see how to proceed further to help this unfortunate family," he said when asked how the family will be helped.

The case is only one example of the treatment often meted out to mentally unstable people in impoverished localities of Pakistan.

Shaikh said that a large national census is required to ascertain the number of such cases. "It is unfortunate that these people are hidden inside their homes when a census or survey takes place. It is our joint responsibility to help such people. “

This case is a prime example of how media highlighted one such issue and a government department took notice, he said.

It is worth noting that the case has surfaced the same day the world celebrates ‘Mothers Day’.

People in the sub continent don't know how to treat people suffering from mental illness, instead of a medical condition such cases are treated as embarrassment to the family. Many such stories have made it to the news in India also. Mindset of people needs to be changed, such patients deserve a life of dignity and shouldn't be chained like cattle in the house.

embarrassment to the family.
For the above story he knows and wishes to treat em but isnt financially strong to do so....

Really is sad but then again even in the West psychologist (meds are not cheap neither is treatment) and psychiatry is VERY expensive (Hourly rates are inhumane) unless you kill someone than state pays for your treatment...

Many times shock treatment even in the West was used as a 1 treatment for all problems....and only recently (late 90s even early 2000s) has the science and research developed ...

Mind you not everyone has dropped this deranged method

I know what they did was with the best of intentions considering their financial conditions, that was not the point. I was speaking more in general terms.

I am glad that people have started taking such things more as a medical condition earlier people thought jhaad phoonk baba was the only treatment they had.
