Two men have been arrested over the horror rape and murder of a Dublin resident who vanished in India.
Liga Skromane was found strangled and decapitated in a mangrove forest in Kerala on April 21.
Police initially believed she had taken her own life, which had been disputed by her family.
The grim discovery in Chendilakari on April 21 came a month after she went missing while on an extended break with her sister at a wellness centre.
The accused are only identified as Udayan, 24, and Umesh, 28.
State Police chief Loknath Behera told the media at a press conference on Thursday that Ms Skromane was lured to an isolated, marshy area where she was drugged.
After being sexually assaulted, the 33-year-old who lived in Swords in north Dublin was murdered.
Mr Behera said: “It was a brutal homicide. The investigation was dependent on the circumstantial evidence and we were able to crack it based on the scientific evidence.”
Both men are known to police in the Panathura and Kovalam areas.
IG Manoj Abraham said: “The victim was walked up to the area by the drug pushers. They gave her drugs and sexually assaulted her.
“When she resisted them, she was killed. There were no eyewitnesses because the locality is isolated.
Both the accused have been charged with first-degree murder, rape and under the section 20B of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act.)
The police were investigating the sexual angle after the strangulation was confirmed.
An autopsy confirmed last week that she had been strangled, forensic reports confirmed there were blood clots in her brain, there were also bruises on her neck and legs.
Asked why there are no security cameras in the tourist areas, he said: “We have installed cameras in the busy areas and the main city, but installing a camera in the tourist area would breach the freedom of the foreign tourists."
The police conducted the press conference after Liga’s funeral, where they discussed the challenges and developments regarding the case.
It was a private affair that included friends and family.
