Four persons, including two naval sailors and two civilian workers, inhaled toxic gas while maintenance work was being undertaken in the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Compartment.

Two persons, including a civilian worker, died on board aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya after a toxic gas leak on Friday.

The incident took place around 5:00 PM while the ship was undergoing maintenance work at Karwar. Four persons, including two naval sailors and two civilian workers, inhaled toxic gas while maintenance work was being undertaken in the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Compartment. They were immediately taken to the Naval Hospital in Karwar.

Sailor Rakesh Kumar and Shri Mohandas Kolambkar, an employee of M/s Royal Marine, succumbed due to inhaling the toxic gas. The condition of the other two personnel is said to be stable. The Navy has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

RIP. We seriously needs to improve our safety standards. Youth will not get much inspired to join the armed forces if they will die inhaling a toxic gas or in a gass explosion rather then being a martyer for the nation.

Navy confirms that no damage occured to the ship or any equipment.
Accident occured as personnel repairing a sewage plant forgot to shut down the supply line leading to leakage of moderate quantities of Hydrogen Sulphide.

Nobody is bound to inhale dangerous gases during work if only their are more effective safety standards.
Loss of life during repairing/refitting or during the daily routine is the last thing we need in our already shortage of servicemens in the armed forces.
