French national held from Peshawar suburbs
Saturday, March 27, 2010
PESHAWAR: A French national was arrested from the volatile Matani area near Darra Adamkhel for travelling without permission.
He was sent back to Islamabad and the incident was brought into the knowledge of higher authorities, a source confided to The News on Friday. The French citizen, who was said to be a freelance journalist and was identified as Phillip, was arrested from Matani, located 20 kilometres south of Peshawar near Darra Adamkhel.
It was learnt that Phillip was interviewing Noor Malik, the leader of the Adezai Qaumi Lashkar, which has been formed to counter attacks of militants from the nearby Darra Adamkhel and Khyber Agency.
Young Noor Malik was nominated as chief of the Adezai Qaumi Lashkar, also known as peace committee, in place of his father, Abdul Malik, who was killed along with several other people in a suicide attack in Matani last year.
The local pro-government peace committee was formed against terrorists over one and a half years back in reaction to the attacks on the village with rockets, bombs and other lethal weapons after the residents refused to provide shelter to militants anymore.
“He was in the city without permission. The SHO went to the place after we were informed about the presence of the foreigner, and brought him to Peshawar,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)-Operations Karim Khan told The News. He added that before taking him into custody, he was provided protection to complete his work.
The foreigner was later sent back to Islamabad through the Daewoo bus service. “He was a freelance journalist who came from Islamabad to interview leaders of the lashkar,” replied Karim Khan when asked if there were any reports that he was a spy or associated with agencies.
In a similar incident in Chitral, two Indian nationals were arrested along with their local guide on March 23. The Indians were identified as Ayaz Ahmed, a resident of Mumbai, and Nasir Ahmed, hailing from Gujarat. They were arrested by police in the main Chitral bazaar.
Police said the Indian nationals had visas to visit Buner district only and had no legal documents or permission to visit Chitral. The two Indians were taken into custody and the matter was brought into the notice of the senior government functionaries.
