Two female college students in Jhelum were found to have been playing the dangerous Blue Whale challenge, a game that encourages self-harm and eventual suicide among its victims, after it emerged that they had inflicted injuries on their arms with a blade.

The two girls, who were students of grade 11 and 12 at Government Girls Degree College Pind Dadan Khan in Jhelum, were expelled from the college after the revelation, officials told DawnNews.

Raheela Chandni, the college principal, called the students' parents to explain the situation after tip-off from a third student who discovered that the girls had been playing the game.

The principal told DawnNews that she decided to expel the two girls after talking to their parents so as to "prevent other students of the college from being influenced" by the phenomenon.

One of the two girls had reached level 18 of the game, while the other was playing level 22. Both had made carvings on their arms using a sharp-edged tool.

What is Blue Whale?
The Blue Whale challenge is an online game in which the administrator (also known as the curator) sets challenges and tasks for the player over a 50-day period. Players are encouraged to perform acts of self-harm, such as carving the outline of a blue whale on their arms with a razor and then submitting the photo to the curator as proof, and other activities aimed at psychologically destabilising the target and causing him or her to become increasingly socially isolated.

Some challenges require you to go an entire day without talking to anyone, and others require you to wake up at odd hours and watch disturbing videos sent you by the curator.

While tasks vary from curator to curator, the final task is always the same: suicide. Indeed, the name of the game is said to refer to the tendency of whales to beach themselves for unknown reasons, thus in effect committing suicide.

While there has been anecdotal evidence and rumours that the game has also made its way to Pakistan, there have recently also been reports in the media to that effect.

Dr Imran, a psychiatrist at Peshawar’s Khyber Teaching Hospital, earlier claimed that two young men from Mardan approached him for treatment after suffering depression while attempting to complete the challenge.

They were the lucky ones because, as Dr Khan related, they realised that the game would harm them, so they decided to see a doctor. It is the emotionally vulnerable and socially isolated who are most at risk, and these are the people the game targets.

Morbid curiosity is the main cause behind kids falls in the hands of evil curators, we should start a awareness campaign against blue wale that this is not the game but a path which eventually led them to kill themselves.

There's no proof this game is actually real.
More than 100 student and kids died in India and no statistics available in Pakistan.
Still asking, is it real?

.
bbc ran an article about this...
Indian news media is making a lot of fuss about nothing and making people paranoid.. some teenagers might be trying to figure out what it is..
there is no direct link between the game and death/injury in many cases in India... and number is hugely inflated.

There is still no proof it's real. The one who ran the original ONCE is in prison.

Exactly.

Bluewhale is just people copying the idea they get from media, to deflect blame off their suicide attempts for boys/girls they like

Good that the principal briefed their parents. I hope they are not class "A" idiots and keep an eye on their stupid girls from now on.
By the way, why is girls who play this game whether its Russia, EU, India and now Pakistan? Doesn't it prove that girls are far more stupid than boys?

That would be true IF more girls "played" it than boys. Or more girls killed themselves over it than boys. Do you have any citations to that effect?

Judging by all media reports, more boys than girls have "played" this "game":

And this is only from Indian media. You can google around for other countries' data. Time to revise your conclusions?

IMO, this is a case of parents blaming anything they can, for their children's actions. And the media latching on to a case of "moral panic".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_panic

A moral panic is a feeling of fear spread among a large number of people that some evil threatens the well-being of society.

This so called "game" is not really a game - there are no graphics, no roleplaying elements, no audio, no world building, in short nothing that goes into making a video game. It is simple a set of instructions on a screen. If the people reading it follow those instructions, they are doing it because they really want to - not because the "game" somehow manipulated them and hypnotized them.

When parents discover that their children have done atrocious things like self mutilation and suicide, it is far easier for them to blame some mysterious external agency, like demonic possession or strange (but fictitious) mental illnesses, than to face the reality, that their children were having emotional issues that the parents were unable to address. It's not like some happy, content teenagers discovered a "game" and suddenly became suicidal - children who were suffering emotionally, were unhappy and sad, would have come across this "game" and decided to follow what it prescribed.

People should stop blaming external agencies like demons or "games" for their children's actions.
