Dhaka July 18 Indian security forces ( BSF) soldiers shot dead two Bangladesh Rifles ( BDR) border security guards while they were on patrol along the country's northwestern frontier, an BDR official said Friday.(Agencies/ NFB )
Several BSF jawans were injured in an exchange of fire between border guards accrding to Press Trust Of India (PTI)
Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) guards were patrolling along the Bangladesh side of the border in the Chapainawabganj district when the Indian BSF men fired at them. Two of BDR troops died at the spot according to BDR source in Bangladesh
Bangladesh Rifles chief Major General Shakil Ahmed told AFP the two guards suddenly came under attack by the Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) at Thursday midnight.We've protested the firing. It's serious border violation by the BSF," he said.(AFP)
A senior official who asked not to be named said the Indian BSF entered the Bangladesh territorial water last night while chasing some smugglers by speed boats in the Padma river, one of the three biggest rivers in Bangladesh.
As a BDR patrol team challenged, the Indian BSF opened fire killing two Bangladeshi border guards on the spot. BDR made counter fire forcing the Indian BSF to retreat accrding to Chinese news agency ( news.xinhuanet.com)
Indian & Bangladesh share a 4,095-kilometre (2,539-mile) border which is largely unfenced and their frontier guards often exchange gunfire.
Bangladesh says Indian forces regularly shoot its traders and cattle farmers in the border area, with over 100 being killed in just year 2007 alone .Every year many Bangladesh Farmers are killed by Indian BSF on the pretext that most these farmers are smugglers and were illegally crossing into Indian territory . Human rights group have repeatedly protested these incidents .
Repeated discussion between India and Bangladesh Indian border security agencies have failed to resolve these issues
Indian is also building a 2500km fence alongside Bangladesh border despite objection By Bangladesh .
India regularly accuses Bangladesh of pushing in illegal migrants into it's territory . India government also claims that extremist element uses Bangladesh territory to conduct Insurgency and act of sabotage inside India in collaboration with Pakistan ISI agents , allegations that Bangladesh completely denies.
Separatist groups in northeast India, such as the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, operate out of Bangladesh, according to the Indian government.
Bangladesh appealed to India on April 9 to share intelligence in order to reduce cross-border terrorism and said it won't allow its territory to be used for attacks on its western neighbor.
There are also several disputed enclaves within Each others territory which is has been major source of irritant between the two countries since 1971
Last October the border forces' chiefs of the two countries met in Dhaka and agreed to scale down the violence.
This latest incident happened on the Back drop of India Bangladesh secretarial level meeting that is taking place in New Delhi India . India is pressing Bangladesh to allow transit facilities over it's territory , a move that is strongly opposed by Bangladesh Government since there is strong public opinion against such move
