Fortune telling is now sorcery and witchcraft? Where do these people get their knowledge from? Do they have intelligence higher than that of an ape?

What age are these people living in? A totalitarian, autocratic regime and a country ruled entirely by the family of Ibn Saud. A country ruled entirely by one family both economically and socially.

Lebanese TV host Ali Hussain Sibat faces execution in Saudi Arabia for sorcery

A Lebanese television host who was arrested during a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia and sentenced to death as a sorcerer for making predictions on his TV show could be executed any day, his lawyer and rights groups said yesterday.

The sentence — roughly equivalent to Derren Brown being condemned to death for predicting the National Lottery on Channel 4 — has provoked outrage among human rights groups, who say that the death penalty for witchcraft in the kingdom is not unusual.

Ali Hussain Sibat, 46, a father of five, was arrested in May 2008 by Saudi Arabia’s religious police, the Mutaween, while on a pilgrimage to the country that boasts the holiest shrines in Islam. He was sentenced in November last year in a secret court session in Medina in which he was given no legal counsel. Amnesty International said that the sentence had apparently been handed down because he “gave advice and predictions about the future” on Lebanese television.

Mr Sibat used to make his predictions and give out advice to audience members while hosting a popular call-in show, Sheherazade, which aired on satellite TV across the Middle East. His lawyer, May el-Khansa, said that the entertainer’s legal appeal was rejected but that under Saudi law he could still be pardoned by the governor of the province in which he was judged. Amnesty has appealed to King Abdullah II, the Saudi ruler, as well as Lebanese authorities to push for the ruling to be overturned.

“Ali Hussain Sabat appears to have been convicted solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression,” said Malcolm Smart, head of Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa programme. “It is high time the Saudi Arabian Government joined the international trend towards a worldwide moratorium on executions."

Ms el-Khansa said that she had been told by Saudi sources that Mr Sibat would be executed yesterday.

Thursday, the last day of the Saudi week, is a traditional day for beheadings in the kingdom, which observes a very strict version of Sharia, or Islamic law, and condemns to death those found guilty of murder, apostasy, armed robbery, drug trafficking, rape and witchcraft. Amnesty said it also feared that the execution was imminent.

The Lebanonese Ambassador to Riyadh, Marwan Zein, said yesterday that he had not been informed by the Saudi authorities that Mr Sibat was about to be executed. He believed that the case was still being considered by the court.

Mr Sibat was arrested, according to his lawyers, when he was performing the Umra, a minor religious pilgrimage to the holy shrines of Saudi Arabia. While in Medina, he was recognised by members of the religious police — the same force that once prevented schoolgirls escaping a burning school because their heads were uncovered — who had seen his show on television and arrested him in his hotel room.

His interrogators allegedly told him to write down what he did for a living, reassuring him that, if he did so, he would be allowed to go home after a few weeks. This document was presented in court as a confession and used to convict him, Amnesty said.

Scores of people were detained last year for “sorcery” and others have been condemned to die, even though the crime is not defined in the kingdom’s law, Amnesty said. The rights group said that sorcery “has been used to punish people for the legitimate exercise of their human rights, including the rights to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, belief and expression.” The last known execution for sorcery was of a pharmacist who was arrested in May 2007 and accused of having degraded a copy of the Koran.

The kingdom, a close regional ally of the United States and Britain, executed at least 158 people in 2007 and a further 102 in 2008. Last year, a man convicted of raping several young boys and leaving one of his victims to die in the desert was beheaded and his body crucified in public.

The Saudis are not interfering in Lebanon's internal affairs. The Saudis arrested Sabat on Saudi soil...

The Saudis are within their sovereignty rights to arrest him.

Performing Umrah, arrested by the moral police for a possible (crazy) crime committed not even on their territory. They can claim sovreign rights if they arrested him for a crime against Saudi Arabia or if he committed a crime on Saudi soil. Maybe their interpretation is that because his show was broadcasted across the middle east, it can be concluded that Saudis must have watched it, and therefore he has committed a crime in their myopic and fallacious views.

No legal counsel provided. What kind of a justice system is this?

There is no justice in a society when a society presumes to implement Sharia which suits to them rather than Islam. I have a severe allergy from every single sect of Islam. Every sect says that they are right...
Not true my friend ;)

If I tell you that I can predict with greater than %50 precision many of the things you WILL do tomorrow, would you believe me?

Look at it this way...

If I put you on a fork in the road, I know you have only two choices, in other words, I do not need to know exactly which fork you will take, only that you can take only one. Likewise, if I predict that tomorrow morning you will brush your teeth and wash your face, would I be so wrong? Not. The reason I can be more correct than I am wrong is because you and I are very much alike in our physiology and in our habits. You and I have the same physical constraints, be it in our biology or in living on this planet, which has its own predictable behaviors. If you take a step, I know that your opposite arm will move at the same time as its opposite leg.

The greater the knowledge and intelligence, the greater the precision the predictions and the further ahead in time those predictions will be. If the intelligence is sufficiently great, it will know and see every possibilities of every living beings on this planet no matter the choices laid out in front of that particular living being. If the intelligence is great enough, it will see no time, as we perceive time, at all. It will see every choices, every actions and every consequences -- at once.

The fact that the Saudi religious police would prosecute someone for pretending to have a fraction of this ability says more of their pettiness and need for control than of their wisdom. Too bad for humanity that there are still enough 'sheeples' to follow them and their kind of any religious bent.

Actually...If the crime is considered particularly heinous, citizenship can be ignored and the guilty can be served the most severe sentence.

The Saudis are within their sovereignty rights to arrest him.

That said...The fact that the Saudi religious police arrested him in his hotel room mean they knew who he was, why he was in Saudi Arabia and where he was staying. Did Sabat practiced 'sorcery' or 'witchcraft' on Saudi soil? Am inclined to say no. Sabat was on his religiously mandated journey. The Saudi religious police probably feared that while he would not practiced 'witchcraft' in front of a camera and audience, he might be recognized by some ordinary Saudis and asked to perform for them. Their religious fervor is transnational in scope but territorial in practice as they are restricted by Saudi and Lebanese sovereignty, laws and authority. So they waited for the man.

But what he was doing in lebeonon is not a crime there, and he didnt do that in saudi right? so ideally he should not have been allowed to enter saudi arabia.

So its not right on saudis part to arrest him and now behead him..!!!

.
Even if he is a fortune teller, he is bad one because he did not see it coming on to himself. So give him a lesser punishment for being an incomplete / inefficient fortune teller because he is not one in the true sense.

That must be equally logical as beheading him......

The real 'Taliban', the ideological grandfathers, are sitting not in the Waziristan or Swat, but in Riyadh and Jeddah.

The Pakistani and Afghan Taliban are merely the products of the extensive Wahhabi indoctrination carried out in the Jihadi camps during the 80s under the Zia regime.

It is no wonder 15 0f the 19 hijackers involved in the 9/11 attacks were Saudis.

The brunt of their actions is being faced by Pakistan and Afghanistan, while the Sheikhs enjoy immunity in return for oil.
