Insightful discussion with Sakib Sherani (Economist and former member of Economic Advisory Council)

Here is the column referenced in the video

Crux of the discussion is that the Pakistani establishment (military) has sniffed blood. It knows with American backing it can finally win a war. The war against the Pakistani people. Since this would further American interests, you will see no hue or cry in the international media about any human right violations.

Same play book was applied in Latin America, Egypt and many US backed dictatorships across the world.

Dictatorships in those countries acted on individual or institutional interests and not those of people of the country.

In Eygpt's case first it was Husni Mubarak, then MB was dislodged in the name of protecting the Egyption military and now its all Sisi.

The U.S establishment will follow its national security goals as it should meanwhile the Generals will look after each other and tolerate the two dynastic families.

Bilawal and Maryum will provide the soft face. The media will play its part and any dissenting voice will be dismissed as cultist behavior.

If you are a student of history, absolutely fascinating how a world power operates and gets third-world corrupt institutions to do its bidding.

You can't turn Pakistan into Egypt as Egypt is not a multi ethnic country nor is Latin America

You can try but I fear it'll bring down the whole thing before they turn us into Egypt or latin America- it just doesn't work with multi ethnic countries

However things are not all hunky dorry, economy is not stabilizing no matter what they do and its complete chaos, one blunder after another making things worse. Also China which is our biggest benefactor will play hard ball with any regime that is willing to bend over backwards to please the US.

Military has smelled the blood but the people are weary and are being forced towards the tipping point.

I just hope some sanity prevails and the establishment learns what ever it wants is not happening , should work out a deal for return to normalcy and actually becomes neutral.

That is correct, in Pakistan's case it will break the state.

Depends on the goal of those policies. The goal is never to put the country on track of economic progress while encouraging industrialization and free market enterprise.

The goal is to get enough aid to keep the lights running, have enough resources to pay for the men under your command as well as maintain your lavish lifestyle.

Egypt is a good case.

Despite billions in aid, it is still a basket case. What should be the most powerfull country in the arab world is reduced to basket case by its army.

However, the army has all the latest toys to show off.

Exactly. Egypt has problems, but Pakistan's problems are worse. Pakistan's polity is much worse than Egypt. Egypt does not have a TTP to constantly snip at the ankle. Lebanonization is a better analogy.

This is a very good way of highlighting the American education system.

Egypt is quite multiethnic and hosts a colourful mix of culture and tribes one way or another governed by Nile river and her mood swings.

Latin America is also a diverse region hosting tribes and cultures of the entire globe. It's not a country, it's a continent like Africa where Egypt is located.

Ah Murica!!

Lower ranks are feeling the heat of the inflation.

Savings on a monthly basis has decreased to a level where it could be called hand to mouth.

The involvement of higher ranks, in steering the country , towards mismanagement / disaster, is a common talk these days.

Most people who make these comparisons to Syria, Somalia, Egypt always miss this point.

Pakistan is a multi-ethnic confederation, severe war and destruction, certain models of governance, etc cannot be folloed in Pakistan and neither will it be able to tank it.

Many ignore the above and give very ignorant opinions,

The only blanket universal based "law" once can use on Pakistan is... Islamic law.

Not even that many sects, classes that move the country upper middle class, to some extent middle classes of big cities aren't relgious enough to tolerate Saudi, Afghan type islamic law

Democracy and islamic law like we currently have (no law that is in opposition to islamic law, every law has to be approved by a shari'a council) except for blasphemy is ok

Latin America has less ethnic diversity but it does have a fair amount I’d say. If you look at other Arab countries that have fallen apart it is usually based on ethnicity/ tribes

big cities have no balls to do anything about it and would accept it, at most they'd protest and get smoked.

regardless of sects and classes most people would accept a universal islamic law, but not the other suggestions given.

although im not personally in favour of it right now really i thiink your suggestion below is fine with what we have
