Turkish vice president Fuat Oktay said that the United States and Turkey have a “creative opportunity to understand each other” as U.S.-China tensions accelerate.

The U.S.-Turkish relationship has been strained, as both countries find themselves on opposite sides of the Syrian Civil War and other Middle Eastern conflicts. Oktay pitched the coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing economic competition with China as an opportunity to reset the relationship.

“The pre-pandemic global economy was built on a single supply chain, with China at its core,” the Turkish vice president said at a Friday video conference hosted by the Atlantic Council. “For countries like Turkey, with our robust manufacturing sector and our young population, this will be an economic opportunity.”

He claimed that Turkey’s issue-by-issue approach would allow the country to look past its disagreements with the United States over Syria and engage over trade issues.

U.S. forces have backed the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in the fight against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS. Turkey considers the SDF a front for Kurdish secessionists within its own borders.

Tensions came to a head in the summer of 2019. U.S. President Donald Trump eventually allowed Turkish troops to carry out a limited offensive against the SDF, and the Trump administration has struck a conciliatory tone with Turkey.

Oktay laid the blame for the tensions squarely on the United States.

“Terrorists started to be treated as legitimate partners,” he said. “You cannot use terrorists to fight another terrorist organization.”

But U.S. attention has moved away from the Middle East and towards “great power competition” with China, a shift that has only accelerated with the coronavirus pandemic.

A new White House strategy document released last month named China’s “predatory economic practices” and “supply chain threats” as some of the greatest threats to U.S. security.

“The pandemic busted certain myths,” Oktay said. “All the countries leading for globalization suddenly became a nation-state.”

He emphasized that “nation-states were uniquely able to provide certain services,” and that “a new definition of national power is desperately needed.”

Oktay predicted that the “slow and painful” process of “decoupling” from China would create areas of common interest with the United States.

But he also claimed that the Turkish nation does not see themselves in terms of whether Turks “do belong, or should belong, or have to belong to one of those power centers.”

“The world is bigger than five,” Oktay said, quoting a Turkish political slogan that refers to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

“If that [U.S.-China] competition starts affecting the rest of the world, that’s not fair,” he added. “Turkey looks at the issues from its own perspective.”

Would hate that but as long as erdogan is there , relations won`t improve.

.
Erdogan change side too damn fast, dumping ally like dumping a girl/boy friend. The consequence is much severe than dumping girl/boy friend, there is no trust at all. Neither Russia nor US/EU can trust Erdogan.

In real world politics, reputation is gold.

. .
Neither Russia nor US/EU can trust Erdogan.

What trust you talking about man? Do you think everyone trusts Russia or USA? I tell you, no one does. Turkey is just following independent policy. No blind following Usa, Eu or Russia. Because there is no trust, there are benefits.

In real world politics, reputation is gold.

Then I tell you that you have no idea what real world politics. Lol, my naive friend.

.
Any Muslim country that seeks to cultivate ties with zionist-america, the leadership of such a country is surely traitors to Islam. Such misguided fools expose their true self and those who have eyes (the eyes of the rightly guided soul) will identify this and call out these traitors for who they really are.

It is a betrayal to Islam, it is a betrayal to the Muslims of Turkey, that the Turkish leadership would ever consider re-establishing relations with zionist-america and zionist-israel.

Leadership in the Islamic World is devoid of any honor as being Muslims. It's beyond pathetic!!

.
Turkey is being smart. The US will move away a big portion of manufacturing from china, wether Turkey offers help or not. So why not take the opportunity and get some manufacturing to Turkey.

That's a wishful thinking, you overated US, they have not much manufacturing anywhere to start with.

In real world politics, EU/US/Russia/China knew, deal with Erdogan is only transactional.

Regarding foreign relationship, EU/US/Russia/China has absolutely no long term plan with Erdogan because Turkey can switch side any other day.

Foreign relationship is an investment. CPEC is the mutual investment of both Pakistan and China, strategically. The more both Pakistan and China invest on CPEC, the more both countries trust each other, our long term interest are bound together.

If Erdogan does NOT take foreign relationship seriously as Pakistan did, then other nation won't invest long term foreign relationship, everything is transactional, and we knew transactional foreign relationship is for the interest of convenience. It can break any other day.

.
Yes but China and Pak is a different story, Even before CPEC there was a mutual relationship build on common objectives and goals. Turkey situation might change after the change in leadership! afterall all it took was one election and trump changed the whole outlook of USA,

Look buddy, it seems you just trying to do a counter post, I understand this. Please read carefully and respect my time.

Having an independent policy doesn't mean switching side. It actually makes you more trustworthy, this is what you don't understand. It means, you don't accept orders from your camp against other countries. But we are strict to agreements we have signed.

Turkey is a NATO member, EU candidate country. So we have alliances with the West. If Turkey would have changed side, we woulf have quit NATO and freeze EU membership candidate etc etc. But our armies conduct military drills on daily basis, join military projects and EU is the greatest trade partner of Turkey. Thousands of Turkish companies in EU and vice versa. And Turkey gets 50 million tourists from the world.

But politically countries may have different views. We are challenging with Usa in Syria but NATO supports us in Libya. We buy S-400 from Russia but we have different goals in Syria. Still we have high level communications with these countries. We are not living in cold war era which you have to joing a camp... we are going to a multi-polar world.

So Turkey as an independent country is following independent policies for his benefits which every independent countries do. Just like Pakistan do military projects with China but flying American F-16s too.

Turkey is a friend who approachs him friendly but doesn't forget who betrayed him.
Ask Pakistani brothers that why they can count on Turkey any time and why we are brothers.

An independent Turkey is in China's interest.
Turkey relies too much on west, market, finance, technology, etc.
Turkey flirt with Russia, so that you get more leverage to resist west pressure.
Turkey involved in many conflicts, it made all parties be wary, what Erdogan want?
Turkey is divided by secular and religious faction.
Turkey economy is not doing well, quite risky adventure abroad when your home is not stable.

I don't think Erdogan has a grand plan for Turkey. He may have, but not a well thoughtful plan. Many of his policy are tactic and contradict with each other, some policy are very obvious for reelection.

All in all, Erdogan is gambling, the stakes are high, it's about Turkey's future.

Good luck.

We are in Syria, Libya and Eastern Mediterrenean for rightful purposes. I will make it short;

In Northern Syria, US trying to form a puppet state by working internationally recognised terrorist PKK/YPG/SDG and ignoring other local fragments like local Kurds, Arabs and Turkmens of Syria. We made 3 military operations there to cut the PKK/YPG so-called canton into 3 pieces from Northern Iraq to Mediterrenean Sea. We blocked this attempt. It's a national security concern for Turkey. Turkey defends Syria's unity and Assad to back down who killed thousands of Syrians caused millions of Syrians came to Turkey as refugee.

Libya is connected with Eastern Med. Sea issue. Greece and Greek Cyprus ignores Northern Turkish Cypriots' and Turkey's rights for natural resources in the Med. Sea. As a guarantor country Turkey had to step in to defend both Turkish Cypriots and Turkey's rights. We defend this doctrine; whatever is found, share it with Turkish Cypriots. Greece also wants to lock up Turkey with the narrowest sea territorial waters by claiming absurd 12 sea miles territorial waters. But Turkey, country with the longest sea borders to Med. Sea of course can't accept this. Thus, Turkey and Libyan legally recognised governmet made a deal between two countries to draw sea borders of Libya and Turkey. This deal is totally according to international laws and sent to UN already. Again Turkey destroyed Greek plans about to have all resources in the Eastern Med. Sea and jail up Turkey to its land mass.

Turkey is divided by secular and religious faction.

Opposite views should exist buddy. This is democracy. It's same in every democratic country. But we and Latins are more hot-headed about these things.

Turkey economy is not doing well, quite risky adventure abroad when your home is not stable.

Turkey leads the lists in economic grow for EU zone, OECD and G-20 for the first quarter of 2020 with %4.5

Effects of coronovirus will be seen in the Q2. The world economies are entering recession and announcing economic aid packages. Economic situation is not up to Turkey after this. It's global.

Syria:
Freedom fighter/terrorist? I don't care. Nation defend their interest regardless what it is. US back stabbed Turkey on Kurd issue, everyone knew. Turkey want to reverse their agenda, nothing wrong.

Libya:
I am not interested, not important to China.

Turkey economy is not doing well, it's understandable. Kind of cost of deterred foreign relationship.

Erdogans government is running on a tight schedule. Every couple years they will try to mend ties with the EU, USA then become best friends again with Iran, Russia - get screwed, try other things and countries and start back at the EU and USA. Is there any strategy behind this? Maybe someone a bit more creative than I am can see that, but I fail to see.

But my Chinese friends Turkey exploiting this beef you're having with the Americans is just smart business. Is it going to work? Most likely not.
