Dubai Airshow 2017: Turkish delight at Karayel presence

Turkish company Vestel Defence has ventured to display its Karayel-SU for the first time at an overseas exhibition, one of a number of international manufacturers bringing their wares to Emirati shores in a bid to tap into lucrative regional markets.
UAV systems from Europe, the US, the Middle East and Far East are all being showcased at the Dubai Airshow this week, with some companies making sure to demonstrate their armed capabilities.
Coupled with the UAV Summit that is due to begin on 14 November, aside from the proliferation of commercial jet-liners at the show, unmanned technologies looks to be centre stage.
Completing the manufacture of the first prototype Karayel UAV in 2009, Vestel Defence continued the development of the platform to an armed S-variant, which completed test firing trials in 2016.
An SU version followed, effectively an armed Karayel UAV with extended wings for greater surface area.
Officials present at the Dubai Airshow said that the presence of the company and platform in the region was to explore future prospects within the Middle East.
The Karayel SU is capable of carrying 120kg of munitions payload in addition to an EO/IR sensor fitted beneath the fuselage. With the optical sensor, the payload is increased to 170kg.
Each wing has two hardpoints, which can also be used to fit non-munition payloads.
Company data says that the system is the first of its kind in the region, which is also designed indigenously to meet NATO standards.
At the show the Karayel-SU was seen fitted with Roketsan MAM-L and MAM-C munitions at the under-wing hardpoints.
