Turkish school children plant trees in nationwide campaign

Students in the eastern province of Elazığ planted saplings as part of the campaign.
School children in Turkey's 81 provinces planted tree saplings yesterday as part of the "Saplings Grow With Saplings" campaign, launched by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The campaign, organized by the education and forestry ministries, is part of the country's latest afforestation drive.

Amid a construction boom and concerns over global warming, Turkey has stepped up efforts to preserve and further expand its forests. Between 2007 and 2011, more than 4 billion saplings were planted and with more than 300 million saplings planted in the last year alone. In March, President Erdoğan had undertaken a similar campaign. The Presidency sent 23 million letters to the public in envelopes containing a seed and a call by the president to plant trees.

Officials said a total of 10 million saplings will be planted either by students or on their behalf by the end of the year.

Speaking as he helped plant a tree in Ankara's Yenimahalle district, Erdoğan said the project looks to give each student "a sapling dedicated to them." "As the saplings grow, they will grow too and in the future, we will have forests here. I believe this will instill children with awareness on environmental protection," he said.

Erdoğan added that in the 16 years of Justice and Development (AK) Party rule some 4.07 billion saplings were planted with plans for up raising that number to 7 billion.

He said Turkey produces some 350 million saplings annually and was a "world leader in the fight against erosion."

Turkey is also pursuing a campaign to boost the production of saplings and increase revenue from forestry products, namely fruit and honey production, for villagers. The number of income-generating forests allocated to different villages currently stands at 3,500.

. . .
Without a proper care- watering the saplings, keeping them safe from weeds and grass and even if not planted deep enough on a nice place that keeps them from the hard sun in the summer and the cold winds in the winter- it will be a huge luck if 5-10% of those small trees survive the first year.

It’s a good initiative but very far from enough to fight desertification and climate change which will hit Turkey hard in the next decades if the right steps are not taken now.

To fight it Turkey should plant forests on an industrial scale and use it’s water resources wisely. There are enough tree species which can survive and thrive in the hard climate of the empty steppes of Inner Anatolia.

Malatya Beydağı Ağaçlandırma projesi is a perfect example of successful forestation with professional planning. Look up the pics.

I Googled it and was really delighted by the scope of the project and the results too. Let’s hope the project keeps on expanding around the whole Malatya province and that more cities in Turkey will follow the same path.

It will be nice if student labor is also used to plant forests or for other kinds of social service. It will be good if the Ministry of Education encourages School Principals and Teachers to organize student brigades for such a work which contributes to society and also educates the young people.

A news I really like to hear. We need a sticky thread about environment and ecology in Turkey.

A bit related, the renewable energy projects thread is worth giving it a look from time to time. We're not doing to bad on renewables however building a lot of coal plants too.

Excellent. I wish I would have been a part of this campaign.
