Turkey steps back from striking Syria's Manbij

ISTANBUL (AFP) -
Turkey on Monday stepped back from threats to strike Syrian Kurdish militia forces deployed in Manbij, a former Islamic State group bastion, unless it was in cooperation with Russia and the United States.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim's announcement came after Ankara on Thursday threatened to strike Syrian Kurdish forces -- considered "terrorists" by Turkey -- if they did not withdraw from the flashpoint town of Manbij.

"It makes no sense to launch an operation in Manbij without the cooperation of Russia and the United States," Yildirim told Turkey's A Haber and ATV television channels.

Turkey had repeatedly warned that the next target of its cross-border Syria operation would be Manbij.

Ankara launched an unprecedented military campaign inside Syria in August, joining the anti-IS fight while also working to keep in check the Kurdish fighters.

However, the situation in northern Syria has grown increasingly complicated for Turkey since it backed the recapture of Al-Bab, another key town near the Turkish border.

Russia and Syrian regime forces have now started to move "humanitarian" convoys into Manbij -- making it more difficult for Turkish troops to launch the offensive they had threatened.

The Pentagon meanwhile said Monday it had sent additional US troops into northern Syria in a show of strength aimed at deterring rival powers from targeting each other instead of IS.

The United States backs the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance to fight IS.

These fighters, who include the YPG among their ranks, carried out the offensive that pushed the jihadists from Manbij.

Seen by Washington as the most effective anti-IS fighters, the SDF are pressing an advance towards retaking the group's de facto capital of Raqa, backed by a US-led coalition that has been carrying out air strikes in Syria and Iraq since 2014.

Lolol most effective fighters against Isis? Without US Isis wouldve exterminated every Kurd in Syria and Iraq.

Every loss Isis is suffering now is due to the Turkish intervention.

The media's massive campaign covering IS in mid 2014 was focused on the Kurds being the only ones standing defying IS whilst Arab Iraqi army 'ran away'. In reality, IS did not attack the Kurds until 2 months after June, then Sinjar fell as Barzanis force ran away and the US started intervening.

However in those 2 months the common notion has been shaped and planted into everyones head that Kurds are the brave and most effective fighters. That counts for both Pesh and YPG, both are often praised as more effective whilst non-Kurdish troops are viewed as useless cowards by the general person in the west. Reality is different but they were told otherwise.

The bravest fighters in all of the Middle East are, in my opinion, Yemen's Houthis, followed by the Lebanese Hezbollah and Iraqi PMU.

If these three militant factions had modern air forces and military equipment, they'd steamroll the whole region.

The Kurds are average.

ISIS are lunatics, which in a way makes them formidable.

The Free Syrian Army are absolute cowards. They hide behind foreign support. During the battle for Aleppo, the most effective opposition factions were, ironically, non-Syrians from Central Asia and East Turkestan.

But the biggest cowards, by far, are the Gulf Arab armies lol.

Kurds are literally no different than FSA other than being Muslim. YPG hides behind foreign support 24/7 and there is countless cases of these lol, all it takes is hazreti google.

Houthis are also mostly on Qat which affects their state of mind (with regards to fear maybe).

Barzanis merga is the biggest shit of every Kurdish armed group, despite having most coalition support of all Kurds all they can do is dig trenches and sit in them, the trench guys would be a better nickname.

That's probably true ROFL.

Haha, very true.

Among the Kurds, the PKK are the fiercest.

Barzani's fighters are only good for YouTube songs lol.

Wow! You deluded twit!

You notice its the forces not fighting that claim to be the best? Which is easy to claim when you're not vulnerable to failure which every force active in war is.

It means US chooses SDF to rule Manbij and deployed troops to defend them from any attack, an attack on Manbij would be an attack on US troops as well now. This does speed up the fight against IS, there shouldn't be anymore 'rebel' attempts. In the end the SAA (Russian backed) and SDF (US backed) will be the main players there, 2 forces backed by global powers.

I think Turkey will destroy this game/proxy with Afrin and Kobani, additional that US officials (army) played around with Turkish army officials alot in person,no trust anymore.

So I expect strong actions from Turkish side with Afrin or Kobani..

(You saying that , the US and Pyd will go to Raqqa, plus holding Afrin,Kobani and Manbij , after that Turks and Arabs will watch that)

This is a big hairlyy dream of you...If you seen that dream let me know.

How can you come into ES thread and say things like "PKK are the fiercest"? We literally have a terrorist sympathizer here and no admin does anything. The most obvious troll ever lol.

It's true PKK/YPG are better fighters than other Kurdish groups such as barzanis peshmerga

Nowadays it's very easy for traditional/conventional armies to get bogged down. Irregular warfare has proliferated in the region, which has rendered a lot of Middle Eastern armies useless.

The best fighters are the most experienced and battle-hardened, in which case I think it's safe to say that the Iraqi and Syrian armies will emerge as the most formidable in the region over the coming years, should they succeed in defeating their current enemies, which appears to be very likely.

How can Iraqis and Kurds be "fiercest" when they were steamrolled like it was nothing 2 years ago before the US and Turks intervened?

Because political collapse is not the same as military OP failure. Turkey's attempted coup which resulted in the collapse of many military units is another example, that was not a military OP failure.

That renders ur post wrong to start with. You have to look at operations.
