Turkish jet clearly violated Syria's sovereignty – Damascus

The downing of a Turkish plane by Syria was an act of self-defense against a violation of its sovereignty, the Syrian foreign ministry has said. Damascus insists it was within its right to open fire on unidentified aircraft violating its airspace.
The statement by the Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Magdissi comes a day after Ankara accused Damascus of violating international law in last Friday’s incident.
Magdissi said the Turkish claim that their military jet was shot down in international air space after leaving Syrian territory was false. The aircraft was hit by air defense artillery, not a surface-to-air missile, and this weapon’s maximum range is just 1.2 kilometers, he said in a statement aired on Syrian TV.
Commenting on the claims that no warning has been given before the downing, Magdissi said the Syrian defense forces “have been taken by surprise to see such a plane.”
“Syria air defense taken by surprise by plane at 100m altitude, even if plane was Syrian we would have shot it down,” he said.
He added Syria did its best to mitigate the consequences of the incident by promptly contacting their Turkish counterparts and offering all due assistance in the search and rescue operations.
This was done despite the fact that relations between the two countries have deteriorated over the past 15 months, he stressed.

Here are the Turkey's records of radar traces of the fighter jet:

Acording to these records, Turkish jet went into Syrian airspace in 11:42 and left Syrian airspace in 11:47 (The violation lasted only for 5 minutes) then went directly into Turkish borders. In 11:50 the jet fighter asked for a radar check to prevent another airspace violation. In 11:58, 16 minutes later than the violation began and 11 minutes later than the violation ended, Turkish jet got hit by an antiaircraft gun (acording to Syria) or by a SAM (acording to Turkey) The point where turkish jet was hit was 13 miles away from Syrian coast, the point where the plane fall was 8 miles away from Syrian coast. Firing a missile 11 minutes after the violation ended clearly indicates that this action was on purpose and hostile. (missile's speed is mach 3.5, it will travel 13 miles in (13 miles * 1609 meters) / ( 3.5 * 340 meter/second ) = 17.5 seconds. So, it was fired exactly 10 minutes 42 seconds later than the violation ended)

Since an antiaircraft gun's range in no more than 1.2 km, it is obvious that the jet was hit by a SAM (if we consider these radar records are true) and since the jet's IFF system is not closed the Syrian knew from 50 km that it was Turkish jet (this information is also confirmed with the eavesdropped wireless communication of Syrians by the Turkish intelligence devices.)

Syrians say that they have a right to shoot down any intruder plane without warning or forcing its pilot to get out of their airspace. It this were the case, Turkey could have shot down 114 intruder planes, 5 of which are Syrians', since the begining of 2012. However, Turkey has choosen a more civilized way and warned them to get out of its air space.

All Syrians say is just words, all we say is supported by recordings and proofs. Now, let's hear what you want to say.

Search and rescue teams haven't managed to find the pilots, yet. However, it is believed that the chances of their being still alive is very low.

Don't expect other nations to be as "nice" as Turkey. Nobody has the right to violate another nation's airspace. Especially in times of war you can expect it to be shot down. And since Turkey is a hostile state (towards Syria), it's only logical.

you could be right, and this is also indirectly a criticize to akp government, the turkish government is trying to cover some countries in the region, for example,the government has supported the nuke love of iran with brazil and some other countries against our allies, however, what kind of people they are is seen in such times, for example look at some threads opened by mullahs and how they react the event,they believe in a tyrant over turkey,even though there are some news that show solid proofs and evidences released by turkish government, please guess why they act so?... so turkey should be close to her allies and forget those trouble makers, the only thing they will give us or the region is more trouble in bad times or good times. so some people(naive turks who see everything through the window of religion) here should see the real faces of mullahs, and please do not tell me those-are-just-a-few-regular-people stories; if you insist, then show me one mullah in this forum to back you up.
