Turkish "fighter" needs? What alternatives?

F-35s are coming for sure. But I'm not convinced that's necessarily a good thing as these planes are heavily networked and almost constantly connected to Lockheed Martin servers for software updates, bug fixes, feature upgrades, etc through the ALIS system. Turkey won't be inspecting every line of code that's changed and/or added and in my opinion this creates a bigger security risk than not having any F-35s in the first place.

Although there's hardly any info available but according to rumors, Project AZM is supposed to be 5th gen.

Not for fanboy reasons. There are not only hostile elements vs. Turkey, there are foreign buddys we can discuss with and who tells you much of this .

It is important for Turkey to acquire the few F-35s we'd already ordered --total of 8 I think, so far-- for several reasons:

• So that we can train with them so out pilots understand its flight characteristics, capabilities, limitations...
• So that it can be studied as a whole for back-engineering purposes to be used in TFX or Turkey's other military programs
• So that Turkey can remain as an industrial production partner and continue to make money by manufacturing parts for the F-35s to be sold to other countries

But --and here's the key point-- we should not order any more F-35s except for some F-35Bs as a stop-gap measure until a STOVL-capable naval version of the TFX is introduced.

The era of manned combat aircraft is slowly coming to an end. We should divert the billions on to the completion of the TFX, Hurjet and especially various HALE-class stealth UCAV programs as well as a space launcher family so that we will be able to reach space independently. Combined with an effective, multi-layered, well-structured SAM network, that'll be adequate air defense for Turkey for the foreseeable future.

I don't think Turkey ever had any intention of buying more F-35.the 80 or so they have ordered should be enough judging by the price and how advanced these fighters are. Moreover, Turkey will be the only Islamic country in the world with a 5th generation fighter jet(which is normal since its the only MUSLIM country in NATO) and the only country in the region (outside Israel of course) with a fifth generation fighter. So I don't think Turkey needs to worry about any real threats from its neighbours who all lag behind Turkey and can never dare attack Turkey anyway. So 80 F-35 is more than enough.

Nope. We have not ordered 100 F-35s. We said we intended to eventually acquire that many over some years. There's a big difference here. There are only 6 solid orders at this time.

With relations with the US deteriorating fast and Turkey intending to use the money on the TFX, I don't ever see 100-116 F-35s ever materializing in the TurAF. But I do want us to acquire around 15 F-35Bs to use aboard the TCG Anadolu.
