The latin base for the langauge helps. I can pick italian, French , Latin and Spanish simply due to the common word base.

Not that simple.In my educational years I've been taught French/English.I can write French better than Italian but it's much easier to understand Italian, without a single class, but this is not out of thin air mind you.I did watch Italian channels in my teen years and it came to me without using a dictionary,not even once.

Yes.Exactly....It's hard to speak it,write on it...just like a small child understands his native language but without grammar,fonetic lessons....it's difficult.

Could it be possible he wanted to study in another European country?? I think that is where the anger came from.
Most Turks see Italy as a poor country my friend.

As I understood by your post, the guy hasn't done anything against the law or harmed anybody but expressed his anti-western/NATOopinion, authorities like it or not. If I haven't done anything wrong then i would sue Italian authorities in The European Court of Human Rights.

If someone is born and raised in Europe, their nationality is European, ethnicity is another story.
