Turkish Directed Energy Weapons

ASELSAN's Electromagnetic Gun 6 times faster than sound speed

ASELSAN, which revealed the assertion in this area with the successful results obtained in the shot tests conducted between the dates of 26-29 December 2016, continues its work without slowing down.

EMT systems are equipped with high ammunition energy and 2000-2500 m / sec ammunition exit speed; It can be used as an artillery system that can be effective up to distances over 300 km, or it can act as an air defense weapon with high efficiency against current weather threats.

ASELSAN started with the acquisition of EMF technologies with equity in 2014. With the positive result of the application made in 2015, ASELSAN continued to work with its own resources as well as TÜBİTAK (TEYDEB) support. Thanks to EMT Systems to be developed, it will be ensured that Turkish Armed Forces have much more effective weapon systems than conventional weapons using chemical explosives. A Development Laboratory was established in ASELSAN in order to conduct EMT development work.

SMART AMMUNITION
Electromagnetic Ball System, Impact Power Supply, Electromagnetic Emission Path and ammunition. ASELSAN, which started its activities in the field of smart ammunition in 2010, has gained a wide knowledge and infrastructure in the field of intelligent ammunition and tapping technology. The development of hypersonic intelligent ammunition, which will have an important role in the effectiveness of EMT systems in different missions, will be one of the most important technological breakthroughs in this area. ASELSAN will also transfer its experience on intelligent ammunition to this field, leading to the development of domestic smart smart ammunition to be used in EMT systems.

2016 General Atomics made a successfull test with a truck mounted electromagnetic gun. They reached a speed of 9.6 km/s. With sophisticated algorithms missiles have no chanche. Aircrafts ? I doubt they can see incoming sabots with existent radars. They are too small and fast.
If the fire control radar and algorith is perfect you need only 2-3 shots to eliminate even birds from the sky.

But lets not forget there is also LASER GUN developed. Germans have already laser guns in operation ( not serial production) which can defend camps and stationary assets against drone swarms and missiles up to 6 km distance.

ASELSAN has been carrying out an R&D Project on development of Electromagnetic Launcher (EML) successfully since 2014 so as to gain electromagnetic launch system technology. In the light of these studies, the first results of developed prototype of Electromagnetic Gun System (known as Railgun) has just been received. ASELSAN proved its experience and claim in this area with first live firing tests that were conducted successfully between 26th and 29th of December 2016. ASELSAN keeps working on this area without slowing down and will demonstrate its first EML prototype in IDEF 2017.

Thanks to its higher muzzle energy and 2000-2500 m/s projectile speed, thus effective range greater than 300 km, Electromagnetic Gun System is also evaluated to be an air defense system that is highly effective against modern air threats. Electromagnetic Gun System which brings significant technological advantages to battlefield, also ensures Multi-Mission Capability by means of developments in smart ammunition technologies. In other words, a single Electromagnetic Gun System can be used in different roles and areas.

General Specifications of Electromagnetic Launcher

  1. Long - range weapon technology with high-power electromagnetic energy
  2. Low cost mission effectiveness against current threats
    1. Lower unit cost
    2. Lower handling cost
  3. Multi-Mission Capability
    1. Naval Surface Fire Support
    2. Surface Warfare
    3. Air Defense
    4. Aircraft or Satellite Launcher
  4. High Platform Reliability ( no chemical explosives)
Within Electromagnetic Launcher domain, ASELSAN has been working with the aim of gaining critical technologies step by step; becoming the leader of Electromagnetic Launch Technology and putting such technologies into practice. In the near future, ASELSAN aims at becoming one of the leading producer of Electromagnetic Launchers with products that will be developed by ASELSAN itself.

Good ! Very very good, ‘one day’ it will be used for a aircraft carrier project. ;)

I wonder if is it possible to put one electromagnetic railgun which uses 80mm ammo on one tank turret. With that velocity, it could damage more than standard 120mm shells.

Sooner or later it will adopted to various platforms and tanks of course.

EM gun is big and heavy and consum lot's of power ,for now best platform for EM gun is warships

It will take many years before we see EM gun on tank

Land based and mobile , gas turbine powered is in Turkish development. I hope it was not classified ;)

What i don't understand about this system is; "How it's able hit an air craft from 300 km" ?

If it's firing an unguided projectile...let's do some calculations first.

Bullet needs 300km/2.5km/s = 120 seconds to reach it's target. (actually bullet will slow down due to the friction of air and it will take more time to reach it's target but we are neglecting air friction.)

An aircraft with the speed of Mach 1(340m/s) would travel 36 km until the bullet reaches it. It's impossible to hit an aircraft.

If we say munition is guided;
G force on the projectile would be approximately 255 G !! (assuming it took 1 second to reach 2500km/s, firing and exiting from the muzzle)
I don't think, the electronic parts in the seeker head can withstand such forces.

So, it's kind of bleak for me, to use such systems against aerial targets.

Who said it can hit an aircraft at 300km? 300km would be the land attack range.

The other stuff you said about electronics not being able to withstand 255G is not true either. Guided artillery shells exist which can handle MUCH more than 255G. Excalibur can withstand 15,000G.

If you read my post below, even hitting a target from much shorter distances would be a problem.

Do you have source for that ?
