Turkey's Murder Rate of Women Skyrockets | Europe | English

A recent Turkish news report focused on the murder of a woman in the streets of Istanbul. The mother of four was gunned down in the streets in broad daylight. Her husband was arrested. The news report's headline was "Another Murder of A Woman." That's because such events have become almost a daily occurance.

According to the Turkish Justice Ministry, in seven years the rate of women murdered has jumped 1,400 percent. In 2002, 66 women were murdered, in the first seven months of 2009 the number stood at 953. The shocking increase has made front page news; one newspaper described it as Turkey's shame. On the streets of Istanbul there is shock and resignation.

"It's really bad, the killing is a big crime, really bad," said one person.
"It happens things like this, I am not surprised," said another.

Nearly every day you can read the latest report about a woman being murdered, invariably the murder will be of the most violent nature, be it with shotguns or knives, usually carried out by an estranged or former husband, or family members in a so-called honor killing. In a case earlier this month, a 20-year-old was strangled with her baby . The suspects were her father and brother.
The dramatic increase in killings does not surprise Pinar Ilkaracan of the non-governmental organization, Women for Women's Human Rights.

"The murders are the tip of iceberg; there is a lot of violence against women. There are thousands, tens of thousands of women, who are experiencing violence from their husbands, but they cannot leave home. First of all, what the government should do is increase the number of shelters. There are 26 shelters in 72 provinces of Turkey. This is a scandal by itself, the lowest number in European countries, for example in Germany there are 800 shelters," said Ilkaracan.

Despite the increase in murders, the government rejects such criticisms. It claims it has introduced some of the most far-reaching gender equality legislation in Europe in compliance with EU membership demands. Nimet Cubukcu, former women's minister and now minister of education, is proud of their record.

"We have introduced the most progressive legal reforms in Europe to improve women's rights at home, in school, in the workplace," she said.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan added his voice to the condemnation of violence against women.
"It is beyond contemporary understanding to exercise violence on women, whoever is beating them, or treating them beyond humanity. In the traditions and customs of this geography there can be no such thing, as committing violence in the name of honor," he said.

There has been a national TV campaign on violence against women in the last few months. Despite the campaign and political condemnation along with legal reforms, a recent study found over 40 percent of women were subject to either physical or sexual violence.
While most Turkish women's groups and the EU acknowledge government reforms, serious questions remain over the commitment of the Islamic-rooted government to gender equality. Ilkaracan says the dramatic increase in murders of women is the most worrying part of a wider trend.

"Turkey has full equality on paper, but there is an incredible resistance on the part of the government, including the women's minister to implement these reforms. Turkey is the country where women's employment is the lowest among OECD countries, the gender gap in education is not decreasing and the number of women in decision-making mechanisms are also decreasing," Ilkaracan said.

Such a grim picture will undoubtedly cause concern in the EU. Women's rights remains one of the key areas of concern over Turkey's membership bid. That concern can only rise on the news of a 14-fold increase in murders of women.

Global homicide: murder rates around the world | News | guardian.co.uk

The 2004-6 measurements puts Turkey's overall murder rate per 100,000 people is 6.9. Iran is 2.9. Pakistan is 3.6. Iraq is 6.7. Syria is quite low at 1.2 (that has change recently). Bulgaria is 3.1. Armenia is 2.5. Greece is 1.0. Azerbaijan is 2.4. Egypt is 0.7. Cyprus is 1.8. Canada is 1.5. UAE is 0.7. USA is 6.0. Turkmenistan is 7.8. Ukraine is 8. Bosnia is 2.0.

Unfortunately this is a very big shame on us, but I guess it still shows that Turkey is developing. Illiteracy and lack of respect for life is at the top of these things. I won't deny that chauvenism is still very high in Turkey, and most of these murders occur in poor or psycologically frail families.

When the Turks learn to think before following their heart, then we might bring an end to this senseless murders.

We need education, build schools, teach them to behave and start with it in the elementary schools. Oh and introduce the death penalty and hang all those scumbags who murder women.

The interesting part is why did the murder rate skyrocket? What happened in the last few years?

.
A MAN JUST SHOOTS A WOMAN IF SHE CHEATS ON HIM , OR STUFF LIKE THIS IN VILLAGES THATS MAIN REASON

.
No I asked about the reason why (unlike in other countries) the murder rate is sykrocketing. Women have been killed for cheating since the beginning of time but thats not the reason why its skyrocketing.

Pakistan's Murder rate should come down substantially as the terrorism subsides after US/NATO departure from Afghanistan.

WTF a link to an Israeli forum??? What you doing here??

they seem all over to me lots of countries worse than Turkey but this is an evil everywhere

What do murder rates tell us about a country? When they are as extreme as Colombia's or South Africa's, do they shape our perceptions of the place?

Crime is rising in South Africa less than nine months before the country hosts the football World Cup. But even with a murder rate dropping some 3% in recent years, South Africa still has one of the higher rates in the world.

So, who are the others? These figures, from the fantastic UNdata give us an insight into the latest figures. But, of course, the results can offer different interpretations. If there's one area where you can find a figure to suit your prejudices this is it. The UN data includes figures from the World Health Organisation, the UN and local police forces. So there is the South Africa murder rate on the summary chart below of 39.5 - and there is also a hugely different WHO figure of 69 murders per 100,000.

So, how did we choose what to summarise here? Where there is a conflict, ie two sets of numbers for the same year, we've put them in this order: Average figures first, then Eurostat (the EU's statistics service) followed by the UN, WHO and then individual country reports. We've tried to be consistent in summarising the figures below - but if you want the full data, go to the Google spreadsheet and find out for yourself.

I don't trust these findings one bit. How can you trust official stats by extreme corrupt countries like Pakistan, India, Russia etc.?

My advice, don't swallow this kind of findings...

Yes, this list includes terrorism that has been going on. If I were to put it more accurately, our rate is actually quite low, even with terrorism.

Damm1t, I simply posted this thread for the sake of discussion and starting discussions -_-, why do you think that facts are anti-Turkey? I've posted many other threads about Turkey too.

Well, there are other ways to get these sort of information than by governments alone.

If a Kurdish man murders a women, then that man in international media is Turkish, if that same man goes to prison for drugs or murder of another man then he is Turkish.

Yet if we give that man a harsh sentence that he deserves suddenly the international media focused as it is on their Orientalist attitudes will cry out that "Turkey is oppressing it's Kurdish minority"

Another propaganda piece designed to scare of foreign investments into the country and demonize the Turks as they have trying to do since World War 1, ie: Orientalism at it's finest.
