It's Turkey's freedom to join or reject BRI offer. I saw some Turkish member here mentioned that BRI can't bypass Turkey and Turkey occupy a unique geographical location. Well, China in fact has no plan to make Turkey as a key partner from the very beginning of BRI.

Turkey is bypassed by Sea-Land-Express-Route which goes through the Red Sea, Suez Canal and reach the Piraeus port of Greece, finally connects into Hungary by railway (under construction), this can be defined as north route into Europe, there's no need of Turkey in transportation to Europe at all. That's also a reason why China pour billions in Egypt and East Africa, plus elevate China-Saudi Arabia into strategic partnership and rent a military base in Djibouti. Furthermore, the recent participation of Italy into this great initiative laid the last building block of the whole design, it can be defined as west route into Europe.

I have to say I like the Chinese investment, but they have a terrible reputation in Africa. Soon Sub-Saharan African will have a bigger population than China - but most people are unhappy with the quality of Chinese investments.

They need to improve relations there, a big market to come.

Nope, the picture shared is pretty much self explanatory. Barring a few prefectures/townships most of the said areas are barren and inhospitable to the inhabitants. You can't expect those few areas with negligible population to make a significant mark on a satellite based photo. Yes, you can harness the resources of those areas or use them for strategic purposes but the fact remains that more than half of China's landmass remains mostly uninhabitable, unlike India's.
