Turkey quits landmark Istanbul Convention protecting women from violence

Too bad Pakistan cannot vote for him.
I find it amusing that more than 90% of Pakistan reposes confidence in Erdogan which makes him more popular than in his own country. Even more bemusing is that a gora, westernised man of Georgian origin, a self declared supporter of secularism, a man who wants Islam to be re-interpreted and evolved into 21st century has 90% support in Pakistan.

If any leader in Pakistan articulated Erdogans politics and persona in Pakistan he would be decried as a Jew agent, a Westofixified libturd and probably killed. I do confess I like his style. Smart suits.

Erdogan 99% gora culture. 1% Desi culture.

He pulled out to distract from domestic political issues I think this has to due with the court decision to ban the HDP a left wing Kurdish party and recent shuffling of Central Bank Governor easy to distract pit the public away by pulling from a useless resolution still bad PR for Turkey

if You Jews so care about muslim women , then stop killing muslim women in Palestine

I see so you cant answer to point.

Let me make it simple for you. either you care that woman are treated fairly or you don't . What religion a woman is from matters not . If you think only woman of a certain race should be treated fairly than= you are a racist.

But you obviously don't care.

You just care about their " dignity " . How " dignified " of you.

As if there is much "dignity " in being murdered , abused , forcefully married and all the other stuff that woman have to go through in some societies.

Hey but as long as they keep their "dignity "

It was a daft thing to do in my opinion. Just makes Turkey look bad. What possible negative effect could a useless international resolution possibly have?

I think this is a case of wanting to be seen to be doing something. No idea why he'd think this is a wise move though - unless he's trying to hide something else newsworthy.

He tries to play all sides, and he has to. Turkish politics is super diverse for some reason and having a presidential system makes that a difficult stage.

People complaining here about LGBTQ+ or 'family' system should know that it's all legal in Turkey, and in fact, the Ottoman Empire since the late 19th century.

It's just his domestic politics, and if it's not we will see what laws his Government tries to pass in the wake of the withdrawal.

. . .
No , why would you. Can you please remind us , how many woman died from honor killing in your country last year ?

Why do you always add this ~ at the end so annoying

The spirit of the convention has been denied by some Constitutional Courts in Europe as it has devastating effects on the concept of family. Convention actually leading to a formal recognition of a third gender and same-sex marriage. So the main problem is not a destructive feminazi over families, but there is a broader framework that designing the society to unusual new norms.

On 27 July 2018, the Bulgarian State Constitutional Court pronounced Resolution No 13 on Constitutional Case No. 3/2018 stating that "the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, does not comply with the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria". In its decision, the Court identified a relation between previous Council of Europe documents against domestic violence and the expansion of transgender rights. According to the Constitutional Court, the convention offers a binary interpretation of gender as both a biological and social category, which contradicts the constitution of Bulgaria, where humans are irrevocably defined as biologically male or female, with equal standing as citizens. The convention therefore lays formal ground to promote non-biological definitions of gender, which are deemed unconstitutional.

Slovakia National Council followed Bulgaria Constitutional Court, especially because of its clauses concerning LGBT rights, which they portrayed as "extreme liberalism" that corrodes "traditional values" they felt needed to be protected.

Finally, Poland withdrew from the agreement last year. In July 2020, Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro declared he will begin preparing the formal process to withdraw from the treaty. He said that the treaty is harmful because it requires that schools teach children about gender in an ideological way and de-emphasizes biological sex. Ziobro had referred to the treaty as "an invention, a feminist creation aimed at justifying gay ideology".

Hungary has signed but never enacted the Convention. Debates are still going on in the UK and convention is not in force. In many other nation-states the situation is no different. Russia is not a party to the agreement anyway. Israel is not a CoE member anyway and has not even taken it on the agenda. (Of course, forum's kinnar figure won't tell you anything about that)

This convention is doomed to be canceled in any country where family values are tried to be strongly protected. Whether the power of nation-states is sufficient to combat the global social engineering that attacks with digital media and is spread across all countries at the level of foundations is a separate debate. But all of these are efforts to establish the legal basis of a new ideology that wants to raise your children genderless and is creating a new society by blessing lgbtq all over the world. The first step of this process is the destruction of the family institution.

Turkey quits landmark Istanbul Convention protecting women from violence

Thousands protested in Turkey on Saturday calling for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to reverse his decision to withdraw from the world's first binding treaty to prevent and combat violence against women.

Erdogan’s overnight decree annulling Turkey’s ratification of the Istanbul Convention is a blow to women’s rights advocates, who say the agreement is crucial to combating domestic violence. Hundreds of women gathered in Istanbul to protest against the move on Saturday.

The Council of Europe's Secretary General, Marija Pejčinović Burić, called the decision "devastating."

“This move is a huge setback to these efforts and all the more deplorable because it compromises the protection of women in Turkey, across Europe and beyond,” she said.

The Istanbul Convention states that men and women have equal rights and obliges state authorities to take steps to prevent gender-based violence against women, protect victims and prosecute perpetrators.

ome officials from Erdogan’s Islam-oriented party had advocated for a review of the agreement, arguing it is inconsistent with Turkey's conservative values by encouraging divorce and undermining the traditional family unit.

Critics also claim the treaty promotes homosexuality through the use of categories like gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. They see that as a threat to Turkish families. Hate speech has been on the rise in Turkey, including the interior minister who described LGBT people as “perverts” in a tweet. Erdogan has rejected their existence altogether.

Women’s groups and their allies who have been protesting to keep the convention intact immediately called for demonstrations across the country Saturday under the slogan “Withdraw the decision, implement the treaty.” They said their years-long struggle would not be erased in one night.

Rights groups say violence against and killing of women is on the rise in Turkey but the interior minister called that a “complete lie” on Saturday.

77 women killed since start of the year

A total of 77 women have been killed since the start of the year, according to the We Will Stop Femicide Platform. Some 409 women were killed in 2020, with dozens found dead under suspicious circumstances, according to the group.

Numerous women's rights groups slammed the decision. Advocacy group Women's Coalition Turkey said the withdrawal from a human rights agreement was a first in Turkey. “It is clear that this decision will further encourage the murderers of women, harassers, rapists,” their statement said.

Turkey's justice minister said the government was committed to combating violence against women.

“We continue to protect our people's honor, the family and our social fabric with determination," Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul tweeted.

the rest here :

I personally think that neoliberalism and ultra-conservatism are not in line with the theme of the times. Each country needs to find a suitable balance. China is too westernized, but it is impossible to completely return to feudal society when conservatism, China also needs Find a balance point, a balance point that is relatively conservative to the West and relatively open to feudal society.

.
Great decision. Muslim-majority nations should shape their laws, culture, and protections around Islam and not some colonial Western constructs which actually do more harm than good.

Islam calls for death penalty for rapists while European countries force Muslim majority countries to go lenient on rapists. This creates monsters in developing societies as animal rapists know that they will get away with it. There are many other cases like these where Europeans force their social values onto unwilling Muslim populations via NGOs, funds, political clouts etc (eg: Aurat march ecosystem in Pakistan).

Turkey surpassed Germany to become the largest European-NATO nation. Turkey does not need Germans/French to tell it how to 'protect' Turkish women. Turks can do that on their own....with a solution that is more well suited to their environment and culture. Turkey shouldn't be taking advice from cultures where the majority of births happen out of wedlock. What a disaster

Turkey fits your description perfectly well. No?

Turkey is an advanced, industrialized, medium-high income, and universally literate society with conservative (Islamic) values & social culture in most aspects.

not only dignitiy , but also to protect Turkish cullture , Turkish values , Turkish Family from feminist-fascist-ateist mentality

Turkey withdraws from European treaty which attack Turkish cullture , Turkish values and Turkish Family structure

if a girl-woman want to have sex with a guy , then father, husband or brother can do nothing

if father, husband or brother says even bad words to hurt his daughter, sister or wife , then this counts also as physical violence and they can contact the police and have the father, husband or brother removed from their home in the presence of the police

also , one of the requests to annul the Istanbul Convention is to try to legitimize same-sex marriages.

LGBT community uses Istanbul convention to impose its own perverse mentality

TURKS are muslims and TURKS have different mentality to compare with christian Europeans

there are irreconcilable differences between Turkish values and İstanbul convention.

Feminist-fascist-ateist mentality Istanbul convention is a "dynamite" to our Family structure

Woman are discriminated all over the world. Specially in the middle east.

This is due both to law and traditions. Now you cannot change traditions over night , but the state can make laws to protect the rights of it' people.

2000 years ago it was the " culture " and " values " of a certain empire , to feed people to the lions for amusement.

200 years ago , people went to war against their brothers to protect their " culture " and " values " of keeping slaves. Keeping slaves was part of their way of life and culture too.

Religion was not given to people so that one group can trample over another , you have no monopoly over religion , do not try to misuse it to justify misconduct.

It was given to you to improve yourself. Not for you to force you " understandings ' on others.

The westernized groups and conservatives in Turkey are divided. How to bridge differences and form consensus remains a challenge. This is not a problem that can be solved in the short term. It will be used by politicians when the economy is down.
