Turkey must be ready for war, says President Gul

by Rufiz Hafizoglu [Trend News Agency] - Turkey must be ready for a war, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on May 13, Milliyet newspaper reported.

"Turkey does not want a war," he said. "Ankara is trying to maintain stability in the region, but, despite this, the country must be prepared for a war."

He also stressed the strengthening of the Turkish Armed Forces.

"This is a necessity," he said.

"Turkey first produced the first domestic fighter, and then the civilian aircraft of its own production," the president added.

Earlier, President Gul said that the Turkish army, as all other structures of the country, need modernization.

"All world countries are modernizing their armies," he said. "Turkey must not be an exception."

"Turkey is proud of its army," the president stressed.

Turkish armed forces consist of the Ground Forces, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and the Gendarmerie.

Conscripts are recruited to the Turkish army. The call-up age in the country is 20 years old. The compulsory military service period is from six to 12 months. After transferring to the reserve, a citizen is considered liable for call-up up to 45 years old. In time of war, Turkish men aged 16 to 60 and women aged 20 to 46, capable of bearing arms can be recruited into the Turkish army in accordance with the law.

In October 2013 the Turkish parliament lowered the upper limit of the compulsory military service period in the country from 15 to 12 months.
