This was a very tragic incident. I, personally, am really sorry about civilian casuilties. I hope there will be a serious investigation about this incident so that we will find the reason behind this mistake and we will NOT repeat this mistake again.

These civilian people were a really large group, smuggling oil using barrels on mules. Because there had been many incidents, which PKK terrorists used mules on the same route for sneaking heavy weapons inside Turkey in order to attack Turkish millitary stations, Turkish Air Force had to make a preemptive air strike against them, using the intelligence they were given.

Therefore, I blame the terrorist organization, PKK, for this tragic incident. If this route had NOT been constantly used by PKK terrorists for sneaking heavy weapons to kill our soldiers, Turkish air forces would NOT have had to strike against them to protect the soldiers.

Again, I am very sorry about civilian casuilties. May God rest their souls in peace.

I agree that this was a tragic incident and the procedures must be checked and verified that all security and safety measures was followed. I wonder how such an incident can be avoided in the future. If we had enough satellite in orbit perhaps it could be possible to locate any cell phone or such, and perhaps it could be used to verify the identity of the owner before launching an airstrike.

But I agree with what was said that smuggling is illegal and using the same cloth (blue+green) as the terrorists aren't really the right way to go around. Especially in an area where the PKK is known to be. Besides I believe that smuggling and selling the stuff for high profit just enables those men to sit at cafe's everyday chitchatting, instead of working 24/7 to earn money to live for. But that's just my point of view.

Hm... perhaps the point of apologising for the civilian death should be seen as a way of mending the wounds, sooner or later people will talk that "walking in mountain ranges where the PKK are active is a dumb idea".

Also it's a first step towards criminalizing smuggling, or improving border security because of it.

A tragic error - in the fog of war. RIP

Even if they were ONLY smugglers, still smuggling IS illegal! And besides It was at night, uav's spotted them in the PKK TERRITORIES, pkk bases, how would the army supposed to deal with this?

What happend here may be sad, but the right thing was done. Better then dead soldiers!

I agree that they had it coming. However I can also imagine what the people with short sight will be thinking, they'll want revenge for their lost ones etc. and this'll either lead to some being dumb enough to join the PKK or they'll support the PKK.

However if the procedures can be checked and fault being located and the families receive compensation, and if this is enough to mend their wounds they'll hopefully make peace with it and move on with their lives, or they'll end up supporting PKK.

No matter how I look at it, it really depends on people being rationelle enough to say, "yes our children made a mistake knowing they were smuggling in PKK territory, the military made a mistake because it was too dark to tell if they were terrorists or not, and the PKK has used mules to transport weapon in the past, so it's a mistake that was bound to happend."

If this one was an air attack by israel on palestinian terrorists the tone of members would have been different. But muslim killing muslim is okey it seems. There is no outrage when turkish warplanes strike inside iraq.

Are you trying to be funny??

Smuggling trough these areas cotrolled by PKK and when you see 40-50 people crossing borders with mules, iy is normal to think that they are terrorist who will attack armed or civilian forces in Turkey. Smuggling is illegal and smuggiling though war zone is both illegal and idiotic. If you are bold enough to send your son to smuggling though war zone you should not cry about it when he is killed.

Iraqi goverment fne with us bombimg PKK camps in Iraq and it is not up to someone with a nickname of hiduguy to cry about it. We do not bomb civilians, we do not kill civilians, we are protecting our own citizens as well as Iraqi and Iranian citizens who will be killed if we do not do something about it. So who are you to say we are doing something wrong.

No one in this world kills a muslim, christian, hindu, jew. They kill human beings. Turks do not start an outrage for death muslims, they start an outrage for death human beings who are very close to Turkey by geography.

There is no presurre on Kurdish citizens in Turkey, they an do whatever a Turkish guy can do.

I am not talking about the incident. I am talking about the reaction here on pdf.

It's a general human flaw to make that comparison. But it's not your fault the entire West including their children are indoctrined to think that way I think.

However you should not forget that the war the past 10+ years has been waged more or less against "muslim/islamistic terrorists", so that is probably why you think like that. I feel sorry that you can't seem to distinguish terror from religion.

Have you seen slumdog millionaire ? Would it be okay for me to say all hindu are following shiva and massacring the innocent muslim population of india ?

I don't mean to hurt your pride or anything else, but the truth is most people from the west are incapable of making the distinction between terror and religion.

*UPDATE*

According to intelligence reports, the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) uses locals from southeast Turkey, bordering Iraq, to smuggle oil and cigarettes.

The reports show that almost all of the terrorist organization’s income is based on drug, oil and cigarette smuggling. The PKK either forces locals along the border to smuggle these items through the mountains on donkeys or horses, or through vehicles used in trade between Turkey and Iraq.

The latest operations of the National Police Department’s Anti-smuggling and Organized Crime Bureau (KOM) targeting PKK drug smuggling netted five tons of cannabis, which were planted in the provinces of İstanbul, Ankara, Van and Aksaray. Police also seized 15 million packs of smuggled cigarettes, many of which were smuggled by the terrorist PKK.

Drawing attention to the high amount of oil smuggled by the terrorist organization, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated in 2009 that the amount of oil smuggled by the PKK in a year is worth around $18.7 million. Analysts believe this number has increased in the last two years. The PKK normally smuggles oil along with other smugglers in the and reportedly forces smugglers to give it a share of the items they smuggle.

Gendarmes seize 1.6 million packs of cigarettes

An operation carried out by gendarme units targeting a cigarette smuggling team operating in Van’s Başkale district netted 1,589,000 packs of cigarettes, which were illegally brought into the country on Friday, the Anatolia news agency has reported.

The Başkale Gendarmerie Command was informed by an unnamed source that a group of villagers were smuggling large numbers of cigarette packs by horse from northern Iraq to their village of Gedikbaşı, which is near the Turkish-Iraqi border. Gendarmes also searched the houses in the village and found more cigarette packs. The majority of the smuggled cigarettes were kept in barns. The seized cigarettes were taken to the Başkale Gendarmerie Command. Gendarmes took six people into custody. Their interrogations continue.

My comment to the above would be, that it's pretty obvious that the smugglers are somehow involved with the PKK. Smugglers are pansies of the crime world whilst the PKK is the Bully who rules the streets whilst the Law isn't around.
