Turkey jails Iranian man for displaying British flag on his towel and offending neighbors

Its a public holiday comemorating the start of independence war that ended the occupation by Brits, on that day everybody hangs Turkish flags on balconies so someone hanging a British flag will provoke, whats so hard to understand about this?

Normal thing to do would be to tell him to remove the flag, not arrest him. Whats so hard to understand about this?

Hard to understand why Iranians act all arrogant here suddenly.

Arrogant? It was a towel man, a towel they sell everywhere in Turkey. You cant compare that to hanging a towel with an Israeli flags in Iran. Are you serious? Compare it with hanging a towel with a Turkish flag on a balcony in Iran, even on our national holiday and no one would give a ****. Arresting someone for something as harmless as this is extreme.

Well normal thing would be not to hang people from cranes too, as you see "normal" is a relative term.

Yeah completely change the subject.

Turks are nationalistic people, its just how it is, he was arrested for his own safety.

You are judging Turkish justice so im giving an exsample that "normal" is different in each country.

Maybe you should stop selling towels with other countries flags on, if you need to arrest buyers for their own safety after they hang it to dry..

It was a cheap shot.

Anyways, I dont care enough about this incident to invest my time discussing it. I was shocked thats it. And seeing other Turks who ironically live in Europe support this action is even more shocking and hypocritical.

Let me save you some time. We have hypocrites in Iran too, we have flaws in Iran too. No need to change the subject again.

Authorities in Turkey have detained a man for hanging a towel emblazoned with the British union jack flag from a building during a public holiday.

The Iranian man was detained on Tuesday in the central Turkish city of Kayseri following complaints from neighbours who deemed the display of the design to be a provocative act.

The man defended himself by saying he was merely drying his wet towel, the Kayseri governor’s office said in a statement.

Turks celebrate Youth and Sports Day on 19 May through various activities, including displaying Turkish flags in windows and balconies. The holiday commemorates the start of Turkey’s war of independence, which started on 19 May 1919 against occupying forces, including British, following the first world war.

Neighbours clapped and cheered as police escorted the man into a police vehicle, media reports said.

Its not like its a common problem, most people respect and are careful about Turkish customs when they visit.

It was a cheap shot.

I would never use an Iranian flag here either, because it's not common. Norwegians here would associate that with me being one of those extremist muslims that look down upon the local population. That would provoke them. But Turkey is a touristic country and sells these kinds of things everywhere. I would understand the provocation had he waved in the streets with a British flag singing "God save the queen" or if it had been a Syrian or Russian flag hanging from his balcony.

If it was Antalya nobody would probably give a shit but this happening in a residential area in Kayseri is a whole different story, people probably didnt even know he was Iranian but some kind of provocateur.
