ANKARA (AFP) -

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said Tuesday that Turkey is considering reinstating limited use of the death penalty if there is an agreement between political parties.

"If there is consensus with other political parties on this demand of the people... limited arrangements can be made," Yildirim said in a speech in Ankara.

He said it would not be used retroactively, but did not elaborate further.

Turkey abolished capital punishment in 2004 as part of reforms introduced in its bid to join the European Union. It has not executed anyone since 1984.

But President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had suggested Turkey could bring back the death penalty in the wake of the failed July coup.

And hundreds of people have chanted "we want the death penalty!" at government rallies.

But Brussels has warned any return could mean the end of Ankara's talks to join the 28-member bloc.

Erdogan said at the weekend his government would ask parliament to consider reintroducing the death penalty to punish the plotters behind the coup bid.

His comments drew the ire of European politicians including Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz who said it was "a cruel and inhumane form of punishment".

The Council of Europe has also condemned any move to reinstate the death penalty, saying it was "incompatible with membership of the Council".

Despite Erdogan's comments. Yildirim told lawmakers from his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP): "I want it to be known that that this (death penalty) would not be applied retroactively."

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli told his lawmakers that he was ready to support the AKP on the issue.

"Since there is a need for the death penalty and since our nation wants this... there is no need to discuss this unnecessarily. If the AKP is ready, the MHP has always been ready," Bahceli said.

Traitors need to be hanged. Examples must be set
1-) Even if capital punishment reinstates, coup plotters can't be hanged as laws can't be used retroactively.

2-) I'm against death penalty. The problem with the death penalty is you can't reverse this punishment. Remember all those innocent Ergenekon, Balyaz convicts.....they would all be dead by now. If you can find a way to bring the dead back from death....feel free to implement.

This is the most important argument against capital punishment, one innocent life is more worth than 1000 killed criminals.
Besides, death can be a easy way out for some criminals since some Turkish prisons arent exactly 5 star hotels.

Good news, finally the EU will lose what tiny amount of legitimacy it has left when making announcements with regards to Turkish internal affairs after the law is passed. A much needed break

They have got my vote for crimes such as;
  • Terrorism and all of its related elements,
  • Not terror related mass killings, serial murder,
  • Children and under age abusement,
  • Treason.

I am against re-introducing death penalty in Turkey in this moment. This will only bring more bad attention towards Turkey especially after all that happened in the country lately. The government should be softer and play it smarter not only by their emotions. Not all things the crowds on the street want are the right stuff to do, you know. If politicians always listened to what people want we should have been in a war with half of the world already.

ps There is so many other ways to get rid of people who are a threat to your security... just learn a thing or two from Russia. For example instead of treating rats you catch at the mountains and feeding them you can just ask them what they know (of course in the nicest possible way so they quickly understand how much you want to know the right answers :enjoy:) and after that you can just make a hole behind their left ear and leave them to the birds. No footage so it didn't happen... :D

All PKK members must be hanged.
Drug dealers must be hanged

Im fine with this but not with the other ones. Especially PKK i think u guys remeber these videos where they shoot their ammunition and once the ammu was empty they surrenderrd. This is where we need death penalty.

o_O

Till 2004 Capital Punishment was in place.

Twenty-four articles of the 1926 Turkish Penal Code (Law 765) provided for a mandatory death penalty, 19 of them for crimes against the state, the government, the Constitution and military, and a further ten for criminal offenses like murder and rape. These 24 articles defined a total of 29 offenses.

Now it's gonna be 3 offenses. For Terrorists, Rape and murder against minors, Treason.

Yeah, i realize that. But it still means "you have the death penalty"
