Turkey blamed France on Wednesday for Libya’s instability, after French President Emmanuel Macron accused his Turkish counterpart of failing “to keep his word” to end meddling in the north African country.

“The main (actor) responsible for the problems in Libya since the crisis started in 2011 is France,” Turkish foreign ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said in a statement.

“It’s no secret that this country has given unconditional support to (military strongman Khalifa) Haftar in order to have a say regarding natural resources in Libya,” he added.

Macron claimed earlier on Wednesday at a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis that Turkish ships accompanying Syrian mercenaries arrived on Libyan territory in recent days.

The French leader said the action was a “clear violation” of what Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised at the Berlin conference on January 19 where world leaders vowed to stay out of the Libyan conflict.

“It is a failure to keep his word,” Macron said.

But Aksoy said Macron “was once again trying to set the agenda with fanciful claims.”

Haftar supported by UAE and Egypt

Turkey supports the UN-recognised Government of National Accord in Tripoli against Haftar, who controls much of the south and east of Libya.

The strongman launched an assault in April 2019 to seize Tripoli, and has the support of the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, countries with whom Turkey’s relations are tense.

Aksoy said France’s support alongside other countries giving military assistance to Haftar who is attacking “the legitimate government” was “the most serious threat to Libya’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”

The Turkish ministry spokesman added: “If France wants to contribute to decisions of the (Berlin) conference being applied, it should first end its support for Haftar.”

Ties between Paris and Ankara are increasingly strained over multiple issues including Syria and the eastern Mediterranean.

When Macron declared NATO “brain dead” last year, Erdogan said the French leader was “in a state of brain death”.

And Aksoy in his statement also accused France of welcoming “terrorists who threaten Syria’s territorial integrity” to the Elysee in a reference to Syrian Kurdish officials meeting Macron last year.

Erdogan shall fight France and start attack Charles de Gaulle in Mediterranean sea. Try sinking it to show his bravado instead of talking so much. :enjoy:

I sense that this all maybe a build up to something big. Maybe nothing but facts.
Only Muslim country not allowed in Europe.
Trump spat over f35.
S400 deal with Russia.
Greek crisis with France.
And now Libyan crisis with France.
Problems with Israel.
I hope I'm wrong and it's just a road to nowhere

When we are talking about Turkey, remember that we are talking about a state which hasn't seen a century under foreign rule and has fought pitched battles with Europe.
I am sure when time would come they would do it.

French are the biggest hypocrites, first they preach democracy and then they arm and support dictators.
I do agree.. But turkey trying to fight with France, EU, US and Russia at same time is suicide. A wise man needs to be flexible and fight at your advantage. When things do not favour u, never get into a fight. The foolish Erdogan dragging turkey to destruction with his ego is not a healthy outcome.

Ur right, he is going at it alone and that can damage Turkey. They dont habe good relations with US, EU and even russia. Turkey needs to take on one at a time and play smartly.
I always wanted erdogan to win over kurds. Before syrian civil war he was in talks with kurds but then fell off. If erdogan had gotten allied with kurds against ISIS and bashar ul assad right at start of civil war, he could have gotten support from US and EU and russia wouldnt be able to intervene. Turkey would have controlled syria and libya would have been a piecw of cake.

You are right but ultimately it is the fault of the leaders of the ummah.
The non believers have had a policy of divide and rule since time memorial. When the Muslims were ruled by a rightful khalifa Islam nearly conquered half of the world. But now the leaders of the ummah can't stop fighting amongst them selves. If you take a moment to ponder the thought of a united ummah imagine what we as Muslims could achieve.
Alas not in my lifetime or that of future generations. But one day as is mentioned in the holy Qur'an

With allies like the French you don't really need enemies. However as disgusting as French hypocrisy is on Libya(and pretty much everything else) Turkish leadership needs to reevaluate their foreign policy.Relations with EU are already strained, with the US as well,China,Israel and Arabs also and with the latest events in Idlib remains to be seen what will happen with Russians.
Sometimes it's not enough just to be right, you need some allies(preferably powerful ones)otherwise you risk being isolated.
Besides I think Turkey is starting to overstretch a bit. They have PKK at home,Syria is far from resolved and now getting involved in another sh..tstorm,which the current situation in Libya basically is.
