Turkey accepts international aid for Syrian refugees

Turkish FM Davutoglu said Turkey has turned to the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR and other international groups for help and added that G8 foreign ministers also offered support

So many refugees have fled the violence in Syria that Turkey has begun accepting international aid to help share the cost of the caring for the nearly 25,000 Syrians, including rebel fighters, who have crossed the border.
Jordan is also now housing almost 100,000 Syrian refugees, far higher than the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR has registered, the foreign ministers of Turkey and Jordan told a joint news conference in Istanbul, where they discussed the crisis.
"We've now had official discussions, keeping in mind the increase in refugee numbers, and we will begin taking international aid," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Friday. "Actually, it has effectively begun."
Davutoglu said Turkey has turned to the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR and other international groups for help and added that G8 foreign ministers also offered support during a video conference call this week to discuss the Syrian crisis.
So far, the UNHCR has dispatched 3,000 tents and 3,000 blankets, a Turkish official said.
"This is not an international call. Whereas previously we relied on our own national means, we are now a ccepting offers of help from international bodies," the official said on condition his name not be used.
Ankara had not publicly asked for help from abroad, but in recent days has begun to reach out to partners. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan this week said NATO had a "responsibility" to protect member Turkey's border after two Turks and two Syrians at a refugee camp were wounded by cross-border fire.
Erdogan has said the cost of caring for displaced Syrians has cost Turkey $150 million to date, Turkish media reported.

International aid for Syrians fleeing President Bashar Al-Assad's crackdown has began to arrive in Turkey, its foreign minister said Friday amid concern over growing refugee numbers.
"We will start getting international aid, and in fact we have already started," after swelling numbers of refugees who turned up at Turkish-Syrian border, Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters in Istanbul.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) this week dispatched 1,500 tents and 1,500 blankets to Turkey, diplomatic sources told AFP.

Turkey, a one-time ally of the Syrian regime but now one of its strongest critics, is home to around 25,000 Syrians living in several camps set up in three provinces.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the international community to help Turkey house Syrian refugees.

"We have already spent $150 million (114 million euros). What are we to do if this exodus reaches 100,000 people?" he asked.

Kuwait and other gulf countries donated 1 million dollars for the refugees.

Its about time!

It most definitely is about time that Turkey sought help from the international forum. It's very stupid to wait and spend our countries ressources on something like the syria trouble that also concerns other countries. The reason I say "concerns" is because they butt in so if they're making politics on it they should contribute as well.

Another thing that I dearly hoped for was a buffer Zone IN syria, Syrias problems with the kurds was also due to saddams regime and many kurds fled to syria, they were allowed to stay in the country but weren't given citizenship, so they couldn't vote, but now that the trouble has escalated to this they're fleeing to Turkey...

I think it's very important that these refugees are sent back to Syria as soon as possible.

I am surprised Saudi Qatar etc not assisting their Arab brothers and giving money to Turkey??
