Turban row: India plans to move UNSC resolution

Lot of sikhs wearing turban transit thru intl airports on daily basis. There is bound to be some isolated incidents of this kind. people just move on. I get told to remove my kara at times & some times i get through without removing. It's not a big deal. Would indian govt kick a fuss if it happens to lesser people?

Its a very difficult thread to post any opinion...without turban a man cant be Sikh, but without a Burkha a women still can be a Muslim...

You do not have scanner?

India needs to reign it's idiots in the un or whatever office is responsible for idiotic statements like the above. It's a damn security risk period. Why is removing turban anti religion? Do Sikhs not take a shower and wash their hair? They are not asking for them to cut the hair... This is so stupid , I hope Indian security does not permit it - this is the easiest way then to pack explosives.

My families life is more important than your pride. It's a security requirement in today's world period.

a full-body scanner is a thing not put in place in many airports...
most non-xray full body scanners are too costly...
sikh imo have faced a lot of problem in europe as well as the states because of their long beards and turbans...they have been confused with another american streotype...the mid-east-asian-osama-protege...
as Irfanj Baloch pointed out...the west needs to educate the kids on the various religions of the world...them dumb-fukcs yank kids shoot and kill many asians because of their prejudices..
a man with a beard...with a skull cap or pagadi...is what they refer to as a towel head...stupid red necks...

But the Sikh response is hardly commendable.

It essentially boils down to "stereotype those guys, not me".

The proper response would be that it is wrong to discriminate against anyone just because they have a beard or are wearing a turban, not "I'm a Sikh not a Muslim".

sorry sikh brothers i thought the scanner can't peep inside turban..if it can then americans should use full body scanners instead of forcing to remove the turban.

True...couldn't agree more...
the west needs to tell it's children why the burqa is there...why the turban is there....
it should be as much a symbol of piousness to them as it is to us...and not a mark of a potential suicide bomber....
when you'd go out and meet a sardarji you'd smile and greet him by saying "satsriakal paaji"
wasalam for a bearderd man with a skull cap...
ram ram for a person wearing saffron...
it's because we have religious education...the amount of freedom these evangelists and christian missions have in our countries...should bring them americans and europeans to shame whenever they insult other cultures...

We can argue that Sikhs and Muslims are relative newcomers in the West, but Hassidic Jews have been there for a while, and yet...

An Orthodox Jew's prayer rituals, including wearing a sacred box on his head, triggered a bomb scare aboard a US passenger plane on Thursday, a security source said.

Some departments do ,for example this is an educational video by Chicago police.

Italian envoy summoned on turban issue

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeev Milkha Singh's coach told to remove turban

Incident being taken up as a national insult: Krishna
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW DELHI: India summoned the Italian ambassador here on Wednesday and conveyed “serious unhappiness” over golfer Jeev Milkha Singh's coach being asked to take off his turban during a security check at Milan airport.

Ambassador Giacomo Sanfelice di Monteforte expressed his regrets over the incident and said the matter was being investigated to ascertain facts and responsibilities.

“The matter is very disturbing. It has already been brought to the highest level in Rome and Milan. Investigation is on to ascertain facts and responsibilities. To this, personally I add my deep regrets,'' the Italian ambassador told journalists after meeting senior MEA official Vivek Katju.

On Tuesday, Jeev Milkha Singh's coach Amritinder Singh was asked to take off his turban while undergoing a security check at the Milan airport. This was the second time in a week that the coach was subjected to this treatment.

While there was widespread indignation over the incident, Congress MP Pratap Singh Bajwa said the ambassador had termed it a “regrettable but isolated incident.”

Around 10,000 Indians live in Italy and many of them are Sikhs. “I would like to mention that regulations concerning security checks at Italian airports have specific provisions for the Sikhs which are fully compatible with the religious sentiments of your community,” wrote the ambassador to Mr. Bajwa.

“I can confirm to you that I have personally taken up the matter with competent Italian authorities in order to ensure that existing rules of procedure concerning security checks will be in future implemented by all officers on duty at Malpensa [Milan] airport,'' he said.

In the Rajya Sabha, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said the incident was being taken up as a “national insult.” He was responding to S.S. Ahluwalia (Bharatiya Janata Party)'s charge that the government was unable to convince Italy that the turban for Sikhs was a symbol of religious respect.

“Why this lip service?”

He also pointed out that this incident had occurred despite the ambassador expressing regrets over the earlier episode on March 15 at the same airport. “What is the use of the Italian envoy's regret? What is the use of lip service?” he wanted to know.

To this Mr. Krishna said: “Whenever incidents of this kind have been reported to us, we have immediately taken them up with all the seriousness that they deserved so that they do not recur. But in some countries, they keep recurring unfortunately.” The turban of Sikhs shows the majesty and diversity that India stands for. It is not a piece of cloth but a symbol of national pride, he added.

The Minister shared the concern of members over attacks on Indian nationals overseas and assured them that the welfare of Indians going for jobs and studies abroad was of utmost importance to the government.

Are you crazy? What are all the xray machines and explosives detectors for? They should work through the detector also.

Atlast efforts of sikh organisations is paying off ...........
For a sikh turban is more than a matter of pride.....its a matter of identity.......
I read a comment of a fallow India which said that his families security is more than the "pride "of sikhs....
He is saying this thing after so many sacrifices are made for India by the sikhs .......the same country that officially destroyed Golden temple.......the same country which killed thousands of them and no one is found guilty for it.........this is the least the govt.can do for the sikhs........there is anger among the sikh community world wide about 1984
Why cant the India do it?
Why need to fire someone for making the statement?
Cannot their be a security check that britain and Canada has in place for searching turbans????

And remember ,if someone is in danger ,find a sikh ,even if dont know you ,he will still help you

Sikhs are not asked to remove turban in India. But we cant force our rules on other nations. It makes us look foolish.
This canot be compared to face veil ban, as you are allowed to wear turban in france, but not face veil.
Also, nobody has objected to take off face veil at airport, before banning it.
Next time, dont use this argument of "we are special". You may be special in India, but not yet outside.

And about x ray machine seeing through turban, why are we asked to remove jackets, caps etc.
