Tunda caught-- finally

His first two wives were Indian Muslims.

But then Tunda paid back Bangladesh by passing his trade secrets to a generation of Bangladeshi jehadis -- including many present members of the Islami Chatra Shibir, the Jamaat-e-Islami's student front.

Tunda has told Indian intelligence officials that he trained at least 50-60 Bangladeshis in the fine art of bomb-making-- and that many of them were members of the Islami Chhatra Shibir, possibly involved in bombing policemen and public targets in recent agitations over the war crimes trials.

"Bombs for low-intensity blasts that would not kill many but cause panic and chaos were Tunda's speciality. He says he learnt bomb making from Zakaria when he first went to Bangladesh in early 1980s, but he has boasted he perfected his art with ISI specialists," a senior Intelligence Bureau (IB) official told bdnews24.com.

But he was not willing to be named.

"Tunda boasted that he not only beat Zakaria but also the Pakistanis in bomb making and planting them undiscovered. This is what he taught a whole generation of jehadis across four nations including his latest Rohingya recruits from Myanmar," the IB official currently interrogating him said.

The low-intensity blasts that rocked Bangladesh during serial bombings in at the time of BNP regime were trademark Tunda products and it might be useful to check on those who made those bombs.

The IB official said Tunda also founded with two of his close associates Abu Taher and Shahnawaz a new terror outfit called Tanzeem-e-Mohammadi, at the behest of Pakistan's Lashkar-a Tayyaiba, for whom Tunda worked.

This group was kept a secret and its members were asked to infiltrate radical groups on Bangladesh-West Bengal and Bangladesh-Assam border and pursue terrorist activities but never claim them.

"This was supposed to be the LET's secret front for creating trouble in Bangladesh and eastern India," the IB official said.

Both Taher and Shahnawaz, who are from West Bengal, were arrested by Special task Force of West Bengal police and spilled the beans on the new terror group founded by Tunda.

The IB official said Tunda has admitted to close links with most Islamic radical groups in Bangladesh and even the Jamaat-e-Islami.

The Indian intelligence is drawing up a detailed list of his contacts and trainees in Bangladesh, so that it can be handed over to their counterparts in Dhaka.

"We will also welcome any Bangladesh security agency which wants to send representatives for a joint interrogation," he said, insisting that may actually help because Bangladesh officials will be able to promptly crosscheck his confessions and claims.
