PESHAWAR - Nawaz Sharif’s call to the Tehrik-e-Taliban (TTP) for peace talks drew a positive response from the banned outfit on Thursday with the TTP saying that its leadership was devising a strategy for negotiations with the upcoming government of Pakistan.

Talking to a private news channel, TTP spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan said that the offer for peace talks made by Nawaz Sharif, who is likely to take the office of prime minister for the third time, was a positive sign, adding that the militant organisation was devising a strategy over the course of action to be taken in response to the peace talk offer.

Moreover, Ehsan also claimed that the banned oganisation was responsible for the bomb attack in Quetta on Thursday and said that the attack was carried out in retaliation to the killing of their activists in Balochistan from the Malakand region.

US STAYS MUM

The government of United States chose to stay silent over TTP’s positive response to Nawaz and said that it was “too soon to comment.”

“It would be premature for us to comment on any potential negotiations,” a State Department spokesperson said.

“The United States and Pakistan continue to have a vital, shared strategic interest in the fight against terrorism. We are working closely together to act against violent extremist groups that target both countries and deny them safe haven, and pursue a stable, peaceful, and prosperous region,” the spokesman insisted.

“All options should be tried and guns are not a solution to all problems. Why shouldn’t we sit and talk and engage in dialogue?” Sharif was quoted as saying.

The banned Taliban had offered peace talks to the previous Pakistan People’s Party-led government and named Sharif as one of three politicians who could act as guarantors for the process.

TTP responds positively to Nawaz

Ah! It's Déjà vu! The army should be suspicious of cutting deals with the TTP without first demanding that they lay down their arms. Every deal that the government of Pakistan has agreed to with the TTP in the past has eventually been broken by the militants and has required the army to take costly remedial military action.

So now the Nawaz government is reinforcing failure by re-starting talks again with the TTP! Have they taken the PA into confidence before attempting to making such 'peace deals' with the untrustworthy TTP?

The ideologies of the TTP and Pakistan are poles apart. According to the DIIS report, the ideology of the TTP espouses the following:

• ‘Sharia ya shahadat:’ rejecting democracy and enforcing sharia law in Pakistan, and replacing the existing constitution with sharia, thus realizing Pakistan’s true identity as an ‘Islamic’ state.

• Waging a ‘defensive jihad’ against the Pakistani army and state, who are considered apostates and puppets of the West – i.e., they ascribe to a secular, un-Islamic lifestyle and ‘sacrifice’ the Pakistani people in return for ‘US dollars.’

• Denouncing the Kashmir struggle, as it does not aim to achieve sharia law and is supported by the ISI.

• Allegiance and assistance to Mullah Omar and the Afghan Taliban.

• Links to the Punjabi Taliban and sectarianism: numerous segments of groups previously focused on Kashmir/India have moved bases to Pakistan’s western border and started networking with the core TTP to carry out attacks in major cities across Pakistan. Sectarian violence, especially in connection with suicide bombing, has risen in recent years, and this may reflect the new TTP leadership, who have LeJ backgrounds. Shias in particular, have been targeted with al-Qaida inspired vigour, leading to sectarian mass casualties.

• Talibanization; this includes acts of violent extremism and rebel governance (or
the installing of a parallel system of governance based on the local TTP leader’s
interpretation of sharia law) in usurped territories.

So then, what is the Government of Pakistan going to talk about? What is this so called 'peace deal'?
