What's new

TTP offers ‘deal’ to Punjab government

What do you think what is the root cause of the problem?

Integrate Afghanistan into Pakistan and give 10% income from gas pipeline to Afghanistan province from Turkamisnitan line , and from Iran gas pipe line 20%

And help construct 3 new cities in Afghanistan

a) It will create jobs
b) move economy
c) Permenent solution to taliban

.
People who want to see the TTP dead have a tunnel view regarding the whole affair.

You never hear them speak against the drone attacks or Pak being the launch pad for illegal occupation of Afghanistan and bombings of innocent people.

Blind support for the corrupt military generals and politicians who're making $$$ millions by the week for allowing all sorts of transgressions against the soverignity of Pakistan.

It's one sided and pathetic.

Its not that I like the current leaders, its just that I would far rather see the TTP go first.

Once the militants are taken care of, then the politicians must be dealt with.

no deal kill em all
No deal, except surrender.
..Kill them all and clean this mess for good...
Do u think by pruning the mushrooms again & again u can curb this evil...!!! u'll have to commit a genocide to achieve this... Even after that there'll be more & more sympathizers...

U need to target the source of evil,,, india for starters...

Prophet faught many wars with Quraish-e-Makkah but NONE was conclusive... Then he figured that Khaiber was the provocators & suppliers for Quraish-e-Makkah... So due to this & other reasons, he faught & eradicated Khaiber & as a result Quraish were so weakened & disheartened that Makkah was conquered WITH-OUT a fight...

So go for anti-biotics to kill the bacteria instead of taking aspirin only to suppress the fever...

I'm NOT saying that we should make a deal with talibaan,,, rather we should put more stress on dealing with their provocators & suppliers ...

We need to defeat them idealogically , use of power will further detoriate the satuation, when drone kill any innoient tribel , whole tribe converted into terrorists , US is creating terrorist by drone attackes.Try to understand US game plan, Talaban cerated by use of force in 2004 by Musharaf in waziristan.

Pakistan Government and Tribel jirga can resolve insurgency in NWFP.

I dont think the Jirga will succed. The taliban dont believe in these things, they just want to grap power by force. It is a sad reality that the civilians get killed by the attacks. If the war is not taken to the postions of the taliban, then the taliban will take the war into wider society of pakistan as we are witnising it everyday. The civilians are getting killed by drones and also by the Paksitan Army's fire power, but to finish off the taliban for good, they need to continue with their war against the taliban. and i agree with you about their ideology as well, much needs to be done about that too.

ehhh political gimick..

Give it a break. Salman Taseer and co is badly trying to target gunjas.

The idiot sharif brothers should keep their tounge in check.

You may be right to an extent. But we are now at a very critical point where we cannot allow them in Pak anymore. Didn't you see what happened in Swat? u give them space and they want more without peace. They just know how to kill, terrorise, brain wash etc. Where killing them may be creating more of them but keeping them will certainly make sure that Pak disappears. Now u choose what u want..

Damned if we do, Damned if we dont! I'd rather go for the kill option! They are no muslims or even humans for that mattar. This is our Jehad now... the jehad to rid our country of this menace.

Extremist idealogy can only be defeated by targeting their leaders and by creating anti bodies in their organisation .

But present strategy of GOP and US is fueling the insurgency by drone attacks and arial bombing by killing innocient civilians .

Look I saw how people greeted the Pak Army when they went into Bajur and even Swat. Don't you get it, people there are sick and tierd of these fanatics? They greeted the army like some messiah!

As far as drones are concerned, I think we are getting at a point where they will eventually finish as Pak army is taking over the tribal belt slowly. Till then it is actually helping us.. who took out Baitullah Mehsood and Hakimullah Mehsood? Drones. Precisely what you are saying, taking out their leaders and a ground presence of troops should help Pak Army altogether.

If you think that drones also takes out innocent people along with it. You are probably right. But same will be the case when Pak army goes in there, there will be innocent people dead whenever there is a military action. It's inevitable. Where I truly feel sorry about it but for the longer run prosperity of this country we will have to make some decisions that are not going to be too popular at this stage. Simply put like I said before, Damned if we do .. Damned if we dont!

Peace.

This war will not be won by attrition of Taliban fighters and commanders alone.

To fully complete Pakistans writ of governement in the tribal areas the hearts and minds of the local civilians must be won. If their grievances are not dealt with then the Taliban will always have a steady queue of recruits.

The following is from the bbc explaining the new Afghan strategy by NATO and ISAF:

Viewpoint: Measuring success in Afghanistan
As the biggest anti-Taliban offensive in Afghanistan since 2001 continues, the challenge of how to hold on to and rebuild areas previously held by insurgents remains.

Fotini Christia, a political scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who has recently spent time in Afghanistan, sets out the latest ideas on how to measure the success of such operations.

The number of dead Taliban fighters or a decline in poppy production used to be typical ways of gauging the success of an operation.

But these can be misleading when trying to measure the long-term success of a military offensive and the rebuilding that follows.

Militants readily label their dead as civilian casualties and a decrease in poppy production gives no sense of what has replaced opium or whether the cultivation has simply moved on elsewhere.

Now that Nato commander Gen Stanley McChrystal has shifted the focus in Afghanistan from defeating insurgents to protecting civilians, new benchmarks will have to be created. These will form an important test of his new counter-insurgency strategy.

District officials living in the district

Several local government officials have been unable to live in their assigned districts because of security concerns. If they were able to do so it would indicate increased security.

In Nad Ali, one Helmand district where the current coalition offensive is taking place, there are 60 government officials but most of them are not in the district, according to a spokesman for Helmand's governor.

Across Helmand there are 980 government officials, but not all of these are able to live in their post. But a new centrally run initiative has selected Nad Ali as a district in which to prioritise recruitment, promising much higher salaries to new district officials here.

Cost of transporting goods

The cost of transporting goods is increased by violence and the chances of being attacked on the roads. If transport costs on a route were to fall it would be a positive sign.

In 2007 Afghanistan's lorry drivers' union estimated that each vehicle pays more than $6,500 (£4,216) annually in taxes and bribes extorted on Afghanistan's roads.

Such costs are an important measure of the security situation.

Number of stores open

Legal market activity is a sign that the situation is returning to normal and stores opening in local bazaars show that there is increasing confidence in security and the local economy.

Reports of explosive devices

If the proportion of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) accurately reported to the authorities by the local population were to rise it would suggest a decline in support for the insurgents.

Local officials in Marjah and Nad Ali say it is difficult for residents to report the location of IEDs. But Helmand's governor says that meetings with tribal elders have been fruitful over the issue of sharing information.

Children going to school

Functioning schools are a sign of effective government and parents sending their children to school suggests confidence in the government and in the security of the local area.

There are 95 schools closed out of 235 in total in Helmand, the local education authority says. In districts such as Nad Ali and Deshi, school attendance is particularly difficult owing to the security situation.

Helmand's literacy rate was put at just 5% in 2007 by the ministry of rural rehabilitation and development.

A joint military/civilian strategy for Pakistan similar to this but with local requirements is needed. With benchmarks like this the morale of the population which has suffered greatly at the hands of the terrorists can recieve a significant boost.

Agreed, but government should allow shariah law , which is basic demand of people of NWFP.
