 Trump!

On Tuesday afternoon, President Donald Trump shared a new idea with congressional Republicans:

His vision was a [U.S.-Mexico border] wall 40 feet to 50 feet high and covered with solar panels so they’d be “beautiful structures,” the people said. The president said that most walls you hear about are 14 feet or 15 feet tall but this would be nothing like those walls. Trump told the lawmakers they could talk about the solar-paneled wall as long as they said it was his idea.

“One person cautioned that the President wasn’t presenting the solar-paneled wall as the definite solution,” adds Jonathan Swan, the Axios reporter who first reported most of the news.

Despite the president’s insistence on getting credit, this is not the first time someone has suggested swaddling the wall in solar panels. During the government’s call for proposals in April, a small, Las Vegas-based construction-supply firm named Gleason Partners suggested a suspiciously similar plan. It proposed building a wall of cement, steel, and solar panels. Each mile of wall would cost $7.5 million, it said, but each mile would also generate two megawatts of electricity. This power could then be sold to utilities on both sides of the border.

Never mind Mexico—now the sun would pay for the wall. (Or as Tom Gleason, the firm’s founder, told E&E News: “The wall pays for itself.”)

Gleason’s proposal even included a mockup, which hints at how his firm would solve a tricky engineering problem. Solar panels usually go on roofs, not on walls, because the goal is to keep them out of shadow and expose their surface to as much sun as possible through the day. To get around this issue, Gleason angles two rows of panels slightly off the wall’s perpendicular:

In North America, solar panels also usually face south, toward the equator. So presumably the most expensive hardware on the wall would look toward Mexico.

From Trump, the idea seemed like a politically simplistic troll. Progressives will not magically come to support a divisive mega-project if it also subsidizes renewable firms. Environmental groups that believe the wall will hurt local ecosystems will still oppose the project even if it becomes carbon neutral. As Brett Hartl of the Center for Biodiversity said in a statement on Tuesday: “An ecological disaster with solar panels on top is still an ecological disaster. With solar panels on top.”

But it is not the first time that immigration restrictionists have borrowed environmental arguments to bolster their appeal. John Hultgren, a professor of environmental politics at Bennington College, filled a book with examples of the overlap between the two groups: the now aptly titled Border Walls Gone Green.

Sell the electricity to Mexico. Trump can then say Mexico payed for the wall.

There is quite a bit of truth to this, and it's not merely immigration restrictionists using it as an excuse not to build the wall. There is valid, scientific study that shows all sorts of land animal migrations that would be affected by this ridiculous idea. The eco system is not a fantasy or some imaginary tale. It's real and there are hundreds, if not thousands of animals that would be affected, and of which are food resources for other animals that would be affected as a result, never mind the affect on natural population control of these animals and the vegetation that grows at certain rates to keep up as food resources for these animals etc. The rare, Aplomado falcon, several other desert birds of prey that depend on many of these migratory animals as food sources would be greatly affected. There needs to be extensive research done on this crazy idea before anything is materialized. What a hack!

what animals do you think will be effected?? i really only know about birds and other things that fly that migrate from north america, central, and south america.

This is even just a preliminary sample: The bald eagle has just enjoyed being removed from the endangered list to the threatened one, and many people don't even know that there actually is 2 subspecies of the bald eagle, the southern one which is a bit smaller and lighter in color than the more common, northern one.

"Of the 800 species that will be affected by President Trump’s border wall, 140 are in danger of extinction, including the bald eagle, grey wolf, armadillo and jaguar, a big cat of which remain only 10 in the highlands of the Sonora Desert that straddle Arizona. Those animals whose range will be halved by the border wall’s construction will be impeded in their ability to reproduce with other members of their species, thereby creating a shallower gene pool and heightening the chance of inbreeding."

This is the fall migration of NA raptors (birds of prey). Check out that route.

You can imagine while these birds are traveling tens of thousands of miles and do it year after year after year and need to hunt and suddenly their food source along that entire stretch is completely altered, the disastrous affect it would have, especially to endangered ones.

This is an actual "kettle" of broad winged hawks, the only raptor that travels in these kettles of hundreds of thousands at a time.

Not even taking into account the hundreds and thousands of other birds such as warblers and hummingbirds etc. Land mammals you name it. Too much at stake. I realize the problem, and the need to fix it but not at this cost.

The idea itself is an interesting one

1. Wall gets built with Money
2. Solar Electricity is generated
3. It pays for itself!

We should totally do this on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border

We anyway have electricity shortages and have ample sunshine

This is a test to see how Liberal people are. 3000km of solar panels would certainly be nothing to laugh at when it comes to renewable energy. So here's Trump dangling this carrot to see who is going to stand up and say they won't bite. An added bonus...the wall could be electrified.

also add some AI to stop illegal immigrants only. also the height is not enough for a egoistic man like Trump. unless it looks like this, no respect from me.

you should be able to see it all the way from mars.

Why would we need AI? It is pretty much guaranteed anybody scaling a border fence is doing so because they can't go through the regular checkpoints. That's like needing AI to determine if a masked man with a gun in a bank is there to rob it or not.
