The principle of collective defence is at the very heart of NATO’s founding treaty. It remains a unique and enduring principle that binds its members together, committing them to protect each other and setting a spirit of solidarity within the Alliance.

NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time in its history after the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States.

By invoking Article 5, NATO members showed their solidarity toward the United States and condemned, in the strongest possible way, the terrorist attacks against the United States.

On the request of the United States, NATO launched its first ever anti-terror operation – Eagle Assist – from mid-October 2001 to mid-May 2002. It consisted in seven NATO AWACS radar aircraft that helped patrol the skies over the United States; in total 830 crew members from 13 NATO countries flew over 360 sorties. This was the first time that NATO military assets were deployed in support of an Article 5 operation.

On 4 October, once it had been determined that the attacks came from abroad, NATO agreed on a package of eight measures to support the United States. The eight measures to support the United States, as agreed by NATO were:
  • to enhance intelligence-sharing and cooperation, both bilaterally and in appropriate NATO bodies, relating to the threats posed by terrorism and the actions to be taken against it;
  • to provide, individually or collectively, as appropriate and according to their capabilities, assistance to Allies and other countries which are or may be subject to increased terrorist threats as a result of their support for the campaign against terrorism;
  • to take necessary measures to provide increased security for facilities of the United States and other Allies on their territory;
  • to backfill selected Allied assets in NATO’s area of responsibility that are required to directly support operations against terrorism;
  • to provide blanket overflight clearances for the United States and other Allies’ aircraft, in accordance with the necessary air traffic arrangements and national procedures, for military flights related to operations against terrorism;
  • to provide access for the United States and other Allies to ports and airfields on the territory of NATO member countries for operations against terrorism, including for refuelling, in accordance with national procedures;
  • that the Alliance is ready to deploy elements of its Standing Naval Forces to the Eastern Mediterranean in order to provide a NATO presence and demonstrate resolve;
  • that the Alliance is similarly ready to deploy elements of its NATO Airborne Early Warning Force to support operations against terrorism.

So, thusfar NATO article 5 has only been invoked once, in support of the US, at the behest of the other NATO members.

Thanks for nothing, the Donald.

"पैसे नहीं हैं। चले जाओ" -Donald Trump speaking at NATO summit 2017

Approximate translation: "No money? Leave."

Trump is as good as me when it comes to foreign affairs :lol: Under Trump, US will especially suffer with regard to its international profile.

.
With Trump as a president who is for USA not involving so much around the world, a president who decides to leave it's NATO allies to the wolves (and he will be right as most countries there don't even try to spend enough to stay nicely equipped). With Russia and Turkey getting closer after the coup, with a a post-Brexit EU being in a refuge crisis and the Greek financial problem still not solved... I am starting to be more and more pro- Trump- just for the LOL. :yahoo:

Dude, write that again please.

As for the Donald, it's up to our American friends and allies who they elect. I want Hilary (experience), i just don't think Trump has an ounce of statesmanship in him.

Trump said he wants other countries to kick in the 2% of their GDP like they're supposed to be doing. That's all.:usflag:
If that is all, then I would agree. There's too much erosion of capability going on.

Trump is just being honest.

How many Americans are willing to have their entire nation destroyed in order to protect a bunch of countries they can't even point out on a map?

The US had countless opportunities to start a hot war with Russia+China over the past few decades, but they avoided that like the plague, instead attacking weaker countries who were not able to hit back (Iraq/Afghanistan/Libya).

How many Chinese / Russians are willing to have their entire nation destroyed in order to protect a bunch of countries they can't even point out on a map?

All major nations, including China an Russia, engage in proxy wars.

NATO is not 'a bunch of countries Americans can't even point out on a map' (in my personal experience, most Americans can actually locate countries like Canada, UK, France, Germany, Turkey etc. It is just the little ones that they mix up e.g. Netherlands and Danmark or Belgium.)

Blah. Blah. Agit prop.
