Trump readies tariffs on $267 billion more in Chinese imports

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that he has tariffs ready to go on a further $267 billion worth of Chinese imports as the world awaits his decision on imposing levies on $200 billion worth of the Asian nation's goods.

“The $200 billion we are talking about could take place very soon depending on what happens with them. To a certain extent its going to be up to China, Trump said. "And I hate to say this, but behind that is another $267 billion ready to go on short notice if I want. That changes the equation.”

Earlier on Friday White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Trump will not make any decisions on his threatened tariffs on another $200 billion worth of Chinese goods before officials evaluate public comments on them. The U.S. Trade Representative's office received nearly 6,000 comments during the public comment period on the proposed levies, which ended Thursday night.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 (Reporter Gao Pang Yang Chenglin) - 150 trade associations in the United States jointly wrote to U.S. trade representatives on the 6th, calling for no tariffs on more Chinese imports to the United States, and warning that tariffs would seriously damage the global supply chain and harm the interests of U.S. businesses and consumers.

The 150 industry associations represent American manufacturers, farmers, retailers, technology companies, natural gas and oil companies, importers, exporters and other supply chain stakeholders. In a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Letterschizer, they warned that unilateral tariff increases would not lead to meaningful negotiations or concessions, but would only lead to countermeasures.

Joint letters say global supply chains are so complex that it usually takes years for U.S. companies to find partners that meet production standards, scale and cost requirements. The letter also said the U.S. government "overestimated" the ability of U.S. companies to move supply chains out of China and U.S. farmers and fishermen to find alternatives to China's export market.

These trade associations emphasize that it is the American enterprises and the people, not the Chinese enterprises, who pay tariffs on imported Chinese goods. U.S. government tariffs on Chinese goods will increase U.S. business and consumer spending and weaken the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers and service providers.

They say that if the U.S. government imposes a 25% tariff on $250 billion of imports from China, it will lead to an additional $62.5 billion a year for U.S. businesses and consumers. In 2017, the total tariffs imposed by the United States on all imports were only about 33 billion dollars.

They urged the U.S. government not to take further tariff action against China and to open comprehensive negotiations with China to resolve trade and investment issues and avoid further escalation of economic and trade frictions.

More than 300 industry associations and business representatives spoke at a US government hearing at the end of August to raise tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports to the United States, most of whom opposed them.

A spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce said recently that China would have to make necessary counter-measures if the United States, regardless of the opposition of the overwhelming majority of enterprises in the consultation, insists on taking any new tariff measures against China.

中国商务部新闻发言人高峰日前表示，如美方不顾征求意见中绝大多数企业的反对，一意孤行，对华采取任何新的加征关税措施，中方将不得不做出必要反制。
