Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says questions remain about Iran's downing of a Ukrainian plane that killed all 176 aboard, including 57 Canadians, and that he expects full co-operation in the investigation.

It comes after Iran said it shot down the plane in error.

"Canada and the world still have many questions, questions that must be answered," Mr Trudeau said in a news conference on Saturday (local time).

"It is absolutely necessary that Canada participate in this investigation. We expect the full co-operation of Iranian authorities."

Though Canada has not had diplomatic relations with Iran since 2012, Mr Trudeau spoke to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani earlier in the day after Mr Rouhani said the military's shooting down of the plane was a "disastrous mistake".

Mr Rouhani committed to collaborating with Canadian investigators, working to de-escalate tensions in the region, and continuing a dialogue, Mr Trudeau said.

Mr Trudeau said a "full and complete" investigation is crucial in determining whether the downing of the airliner had indeed been a mistake, and he said compensation by Iran to the families should be "part of the mix".

Mr Trudeau said he told Mr Rouhani that Iran's admission it unintentionally shot down the passenger jet was "an important step", but he added that more steps must be taken to have "full clarity on how such a horrific tragedy could have occurred".

Mr Trudeau said he was furious and outraged.

"Canada will not rest until we get the accountability, justice, and closure that the families deserve," he said.

I`m sure he can take that up with a certain donald trump whos ill considered actions precipitated this whole series of events.I`m not sure what sort of response he`ll get tho.

. .
he should also demand justice for multiple plane crashes due to boeing 737 max faulty software resulting from negligence of u.s authorities which killed more than double number of people

.
Also provide justice of iranian flight which was shot down by US.

Didn't Ronald Regan already apologised for the incident back in 1988 and compensated the family? I didn't see Iran did either of them yet...

.
Young Beard demands justice from Old Beard.

These demands are well within the international charter and i expect the Iranian government to respect the sentiments of the Canadian government.

I, for one, believe the Iranian explanation that one of their air-defense officers had only seconds to decide whether the incoming object was a cruise missile, or an innocent object not to be attacked.

Clearly, there needs to be a better information technology interface between civilian airports and air defense bases, world-wide.

Punishment of the officers involved is futile, and unnecessary, according to me.
After all, without proper information, mistakes are easy to make.

i do mourn the loss of civilian lives, btw.

No,there was never any apology or admission of legal liability, indeed the us continued to insist that the ship was in international waters [it wasnt] and that it was defending itself. The most that ronbo offered was a diplomatic note expressing "deep regret".It took 8 years for a settlement to be reached at the icj where the us despite not offering an apology or accepting liability agreed to pay $61.8 million.
Probably the most disgusting part to many people was the awarding of medals to the crew and the air warfare coordinator, tho this was supposedly for "the completion of their tours",in 1990 the captain received a legion of merit.

This might be a good opportunity for Canada to re-establish diplomatic ties with Iran and have a civilized conversation with them about the tragedy.

Trudeau is the same darling of the liberal West who supports Israel so much that he put restrictions on BDS in Canada.

He is just a more appealing image to the same problem.

Reagen actually did apologise (while not using the word apologise) on the incident in two separate letter, one open, one private to the Iranian counter part.

https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/doc...-the-united-states-navy-over-the-persian-gulf (The open letter/statement)

https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1988-07-06-mn-5341-story.html (Mentioned he send a private letter and think he apologised enough for the incident)

While nobody knows what the private notes said, it is probably a diplomatic letter as take responsibility for the action. The open letter though, was the standard "Regret loss of life" letter, which could mean something or mean nothing.

And finally, in term of civil law, US paid the compensation is in itself an admission of guilt. If you are not a guilty part, you will not pay the compensation.

As for defending itself, no country would directly take "Hey, what we did was wrong" approach, of almost all of the accidental shoot down incident. Nobody would ever admit they should not have done so, but will say things like "regret", "unfortunate" and sometime even without warrant an response.

In 1954 PLA fighters shot down a Cathay Pacific DC-4, in it's "Apology" it mentioned only "accidental and unfortunate incident", the pilot were promoted, mostly because of the limited air war that follow the rescue operation.

In 1955, Bulgaria fighters shot down an Israeli flight El Al 402, the Bulguria blame El Al 402 for intruding its airspace (Which was disputed) but in its "Apology" the Bulgarian claim their fighter pilot made a hasty decision. The pilots were considered jail term and demotion, none were made.

In 1978, Soviet Union fighters shot down Korean Flight 902 intruding into SU airspace due to navigation error. 10 of the passenger and crew was killed. SU did not issue an apology to the incident, rather, they send KAL a $100,000 bill for the fighter interception and shipping of the remain of KAL flight and body back to Korea.

In 1980, an Italian Itavia Flight 870 DC-9 was shot down, presumably by French via missile (At least this is what Italy court rules, the missile part, not the French part), no apology was record from anyone, no blame as to recorded for anyone. Italy court order Italy Military to compensate partly to the incident in 2013 (Yes, 33 years later) and currently there are no responsibility being assign to this incident.

In 1983, the famous (or rather infamous) KAL 007 incident. SU did not offer an apology nor offer any compensation (It was compensated by US via a court case in the end), SU still maintain KAL007 is a Spy Plane (RC-135) and was right to shoot them down, and blame CIA for the incident, even tho fighter send to intercept clearly see it is an civilian airline.

What you said only make sense if the Iranian shooting down an Iraqi or US airliner near Iraqi border. The fog of war should only have existed for the opponent, not your own side.

The PS752 left Tehran airport at 06:12:47 and stop transmitted at around 06:14:45. Which mean the aircraft was shot down about 2 minutes after it depart from Runway. Which essentially mean Iranian shot down the aircraft immediately after it take off. (If you factor in missile flight time, human reaction time and so on)

When PS752 left Tehran, they will need ATC clearance, which mean ATC have to watch and double check if there are any thing threat or impeding factor before clearance is granted. I am not too sure how Iranian ATC works, but ATC usually have a direct line communication with the Military and its flight data should be broadcast to the surrounding airspace controller so Military and Civil Air Control would know which aircraft taking off from which airport in real time (Ironically which was a rule made after US shot down Iran Air 655 because the record was not updated) So there are literally no excuse for Iranian not to know the airplane they are shooting down is PS752. Because Iranian ATC have to notify the Iranian Military and the Military themselves have to know the aircraft is taking off.

Now, the only way this can happens is either PS752 takes off without ATC Clearance, or Iranian did not broadcast the flight data, or Iranian military did not have any communication with Iranian ATC system. All of which beside the first one, was a serious fault within either Iranian Military or Iranian ATC system.
