Train travel changing for the worse in Pakistan

Tracks don't last for that long. Concrete sleepers can last a few decades. Also the ballast. Rails don't last that long. Nothing should be before 1947 except for unused lines.

The routes build by thr Brits were for their benefits not for the benefit of the people. There needs to be a major survey and study done again. Like making a rail network from scratch. They we will see profits, same goes for India

Pakistan has invested heavily on expressways

I think it was a blunder

Pakistan should have used that money to modernise its railways both cargo and passenger.

That would have helped the economy to grow rapidly

People prefer cars over train, like how Americans prefer cars over train. They're are many rapid bus lines that go to cities all over Pakistan. They're quality is the same or better then flying in economy class.

Also they are motorways not expressways

This could be because of more traffic on the tracks and thus for safety reasons such delays occur.

One should always keep in mind that tracks still in use in Pakistan are British made and are over 200 years old in some parts.

Hopefully things will improve.

The tracks are not being maintained and that have resulted in multiple minor accidents over last few months. These are one reason of delay.
Another reason i was told about a railway employee was that previous Railway kept spare engines at some major stations so that if there is any engine fault the spare engine can reach that train in approximate 4 hours (they were placed like that) but now new trains have been launched and the spare engines are in use.

As per my analysis (and a user) the Railways were in excellent condition under Sheikh Rashid in Musharraf era. Then Bilor came and screwed everything up so bad that it seemed beyond repair. PMLN gov and Saad Rafique brough back railway to that Sheikh Rasheed standards and even surpassed that in some departments (cargo mainly). Now Sheikh is keep it where it was at end of Saad Rafique's time or a notch or two below that. Need to:

1. Improve punctuality. A hour or hour and a half delay in Lahore to Karachi journey is not huge as per our standards and is always there but anymore delay is problematic.
2. Need to focus more on his department and less on politics, the lower staff of railways like patrolmen etc, responsible to maintain the tracks are doing nothing at all. Make them work

The ticketing system is good (no blacks ticketing) and transparent. Should improve that online ticketing website (it takes forever to book a ticket). Focus on small matters that don't even cost a lot and there will be marked improvement. Only starting new trains SHOULD NOT be the parameter to gauge the performance. Minister sahib needs to understand this!
