Practical Hydrogen-powered cars, also widely known as Fuel-Cell Vehicles have yet to gain the mainstream nod of approval. Toyota aims to change this with the all-new 2016 Mirai.

It's based on the current 2014 Toyota Prius v platform, albeit a little longer. Power comes from a 151-hp electric motor that's shared with the current-generation Lexus RX 450h. The Mirai's battery is also the same 1.7 kilowatt-hour version used in the Camry Hybrid, while the fuel cell itself sits underneath the front seats. Two carbon-fiber compressed hydrogen tanks sit behind the passenger seat and underneath the rear passenger bench seat.

To see how it all works, check out the video below.

Pricing
The 2016 Toyota Mirai will be priced at $57,500. While the price does seem steep, tax credits could bring the price down to a more manageable $45,000.

Range
The Mirai will get a range of 312 miles. That's pretty darn good. And fueling will be easy, as you'll be ably to type in a passcode into a hydrogen dispenser which will release roughly 5 kg of compressed hydrogen into the Mirai's tanks. One kg of hydrogen will net around 60 miles. The best part? Hydrogen will be free for the first three years of ownership. That's three years worth of free fuel, folks.

Warranty
The Mirai also features a comprehensive warranty and owner service package, including three years worth of complimentary fuel, three years of 24/7 customer call support and a generous 8-year/100,000-mile warranty on key fuel cell vehicle components. For more details on the coverage, visit the official Toyota's Mirai FAQ page.

Release Date
If you're interested in a Mirai, Toyota has officially opened the Mirai customer request portal. That being said, the Mirai will initially only be available for sale in certain parts of California. The first samples will hit roads in October of 2015. We can't wait.

Nice interior, but I don't like the front grill. Unlikely to sell in Malaysia, still have oil to burn.

I hope someday toyota make 4x4 suv like land cruiser with this tech......

This is like the type of car my sister's friends would drive, lol. For the amount of money they'll pay for the Mirai, they can get a loaded Toyota 4Runner or a Toyota Highlander Limited.

I'm an SUV type of guy, for most of my young adult life I usually have owned SUVs, but if I would go for a large sedan, I'd go with the Toyota Century, the 2015 model looks nice.... :)

Talk about fuel efficiency, eh, @initial_d ?;)

@powastick ,

The Toyota Century is a 12 cylinder. Meaning, this baby is as powerful as a Toyota Sequoia , lol.

Based on the Prius. Does that mean it will handle like one too? I'm in the market for a new car, currently driving an Audi Q5, but I want something smaller. I've got my name on the list for a Tesla Model S (the government subsidies for owning an electric car make it an attractive option for me), so I'll see how that goes - for a few years, but if I doesn't work out I might try something from Asia instead.

I work outside of Sandefjord, weather permitting I actually fly (via a company Piper Meridian) rather than drive to work (2 1/2 hour drive - I leave my house at 5, get to work by 9), but the weather doesn't typically cooperate:(.

What would you suggest as far as Asian car designs are concerned? I'm open to American cars too.

.
Then that is truly the future..........sadly V12s are a dying breed now :(

These cars will sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars 20 years from now. Take the case of Mclaren F-1, during it's production time, it was used to cost at around $700,000, now best of luck finding one for less than $4-5 million.A well kept Jaguar E type fetches more than $100,000 in the market.

These hand build legacies needs to be passed on to the next generation.
