Toyota To Build A $1.2 Billion Electric Car Factory in Tianjin, China

BY BRAD ANDERSON | MARCH 6, 2020 1

Toyota intends on building a new electric vehicle plant in Tianjin, China with its local partner FAW Group, Reuters reports.

A document issued by local authorities of the China-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city says the two automakers will invest around 8.5 billion yuan ($1.22 billion) in the site.

The plant will have an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles, all of which will be new energy vehicles. In China, new energy vehicles are classified as battery-only, plug-in hybrid, and fuel-cell vehicles.

Toyota hasn’t commented on the plans. In a statement, it said that China is one of its most important global markets and that it is constantly considering various measures to ensure the nation is able to meet the needs of its growing local business.

Vehicle sales in China dropped by 8.2 per cent last year but sales of Toyota and Lexus models jumped by 9 per cent locally compared to the year prior.

Some outlets claim that Toyota and FAW Group want to complete construction of the site and start producing vehicles before the end of the year.

It remains unclear what vehicles Toyota will produce at the site. Gasgoo claims a new battery electric vehicle jointly developed by Toyota and BYD could be built at the site.

Meanwhile, under the glorious reign of his majesty, Emperor Donald the Magnificent...

Toyota warns US workers build Camry for less, or else...

I believe you need to re-align your thinking.

The US Govt. controls and regulates policy on whomever builds, markets and sells whatever car in the US. It is a privilege awarded to the best global car makers.

If Toyota left - then too bad, people will buy other cars and other electrics or hybrids.

Any threats by companies like Toyota will be met with tougher tit-for-tat sanctions or measures. Toyota is mindful of that. The US does not play around (Trump or no Trump).

The loss of a few hundred jobs doesn't mean much to the US Govt. However the loss of sales to Toyota WILL mean a lot.

@Hamartia Antidote and @KAL-EL - your thoughts...

I don't know - current Civic looks different, plus this is the luxury version of the Prius.

For that kinda dough - I'd rather get the UX Hybrid from Lexus (MSRP around $34,000).

Prius is a rather feminine car, the UX has a bit better charisma and oomph....plus it IS a LEXUS.

Like I said before, some low value manufacturing eventually will move outside China to third world countries.
Because of rising wages and standard of living in China.

But it's stupid and idiot to think that China is doomed.
The reality is China economic is transforming from Low-Middle Income to High-Middle Income economic.
More and more High Value Manufacturing come to China is the evidence.

And $1.2 Billion New Electric Car Toyota Plant in Tianjin is one of the proof. China will move to High Value Manufacturing in the near future

I wonder what type vehicle that BYD and Toyota collaborate.

BYD cars is very lovely.
Honestly I'm falling in love with BYD EV SUV with not so many buttons, because they have Integrated Concept.
Intelligent Information System for almost all function in one Big Display Screen :enjoy: just like Tesla

Toyota has terrible reputation from the crap their imported in nineties, and crap they made with local assemblers in 200X.

Only in the last decade, Toyota went into panic mode, and started repairing its reputation from sale of "3rd world models"

Toyota sees an EV market that desires EVs with higher quality than local manufacturers can supply. Tesla immediately jumped to the top after the Shanghai plant opening. This caught Toyota's attention quickly.

Those traditional manufacturers can compete with new manufacturers with high technology background.

They seem to be falling asleep according to the loss in marketshare. It's only going to get worse with Tesla's plant now open.

I have no doubts about that.
There is a typo in my previous post, I meant they can't compete with Tesla.
