Without resolving the border issue it will be impossible to build on relationship between India and china. We can only try, but the disputes will never be far away and will always sour the discussions.

It can only happen if India give something back. Vietnam is smart to draw India in cause they want to see the confront between India and China. This will make China's 981 move back and Vietnam knows exactly why is that.
Agree. China's policy is clear. Get business done, everything else put away. That's the best route for now.
As for future? I don't even think the government knows cause no one wants to solve it.
india will not give you anything back, rather india will take aksai chin (part of india) back. and i repeat, your leader will agree with that but you will not be able to protest. there is a reason democratic countries are considered powerful because democratic govts are accountable and answerable to the nation while dictators are not. democracy is patriotism while dictatorship is all about personality cult worship.

Tell me how many months China will return it and so I can put it in my calendar, fortune teller.
India has given something back to china in the form of Tibet. I agree India did a poor job of negotiating that, but that debt still remains. (don't link it to sikkim)
India's policy is also to focus on business, only the geo political games that is played around china will make doing business that much more complex and unpredictable and hence more riskier.
Vietnam is smart to draw India in and India is smart to engage with Vietnam. Only India would not have done that if the border dispute was settled.
If the border dispute is not settled then India will start getting more and more engaged with Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Philippines etc. and that will not be good for china. That is the inevitable conclusion.
The smarter thing to do is to settle border with China so that India has no interest in joining a anti-china alliance.

China will not accept any solution to the border as the power is dramatically shifting to China. India has absolutely nothing to counter China with. China is actively building the string of pearls in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar which will eventually hold Chinese naval bases if India goes rogue.

Now that Russia is sanctioned by the West, they need China more than ever.
China and Russia run the BRICS, SCO. If India allies with the West to hurt China then it will hurt BRICS and SCO interests, India will be kicked out.
That means India is completely isolated and has no counter to the West which means the West knows it has India under its thumb. India becomes another Japan, which has no independent foreign policy and has to kowtow to the West in everything.
India is best served making friends with its superior partner China.
