Singapore has among the highest military expenditure in the whole world, just behind UAE, USA and Israel and Singaporeans -- hate it very very much.
The exorbitant spending does not benefit normal Singaporeans but politicians and the arm forces, many of them receiving very high salary. Singaporeans has been increasingly hating our arm forces. Things were not like this in the past. Then, we were very much more patriotic and willing to sacrifice for our countries.
Things start changing when we see our government in widening the income gap, aka stealing from people to enrich themselves, and we begin to wonder what and who are we protecting.
Also the over representation of upper-class in the military with privileges brought forth a lot of resentment. In our army, the favor of upper class and their representation in officer corps is a main reason that it goes decadence. The soldiers can see that their officers are weak and do not merit respect. Many do not have honorable personalities and soldiers despise them.
There are incidences the rich dodge draft for years overseas and got welcome back with red carpet. The poor who went few days AWOLS get into military prison (more hell than civilian jail, I nearly went to military prison for things like insubordination).
We do not know whether we will fight when there is a war. FYI I served 2.5 years.
The inequality, privileges of the upper class, are always the main reason that wreck the spirit on military.
