A top ranking Maoist leader leading the extremist movement in Gadchiroli of Maharashtra and his wife have reportedly surrendered themselves to Andhra Pradesh police, sources said on Friday.
The surrendered leader, Bandarapu Mallaiah, is reportedly heading the South division of Gadchiroli in the CPI Maoist party. Mallaiah goes by the alias name of Chandranna in his party circles and hails from Machupet village in Mahamuttaram mandal of Karimnagar district.
Sources said his wife Gadhagoni Balavva alias Vijaya too surrendered. She hails from Govardhanagiri village of Karimnagar district.
The Maoist couple, interestingly surrendered themselves to Khammam police. Their surrender has not yet been officially announced.
Chandranna is one of the senior most leaders in the Maoist party and was believed to be involved in several criminal cases. He carries a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head.
Gadchiroli of Maharashtra is divided into South, North divisions in the Maoist organisation and is part of the Dankakaranya Special Zonal Committee. (DKSZC).
Incidentally, the Maoists have shot dead a person in Pankena in Mahadevpur mandal, accusing him of being a police spy. Pankena is adjacent to the village from which the surrendered Naxalites hails.
