DHAKA: Bangladesh's war crimes court Tuesday sentenced a leading Islamist to death for crimes committed during the country's 1971 conflict.

A.T.M Azharul Islam, 62, became the 16th person and the 11th Islamist to be convicted of atrocities by the International Crimes Tribunal, which found him guilty of being a key member of a militia.
Azharul Islam is the assistant secretary general of the nation's largest religious party, the Jamaat-i-Islami.

He was ordered “hanged by the neck” for the genocide in the northern district of Rangpur. “No doubt, it was mass murder,” presiding judge Enayetur Rahim told a packed court.

The nine-month war in 1972 saw what was then east Pakistan break away from the regime in Islamabad. Since it was established by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government in 2010, the self-styled International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced around a dozen opposition leaders for war crimes.

Rights groups have criticised the trials, saying they fall short of international standards and lack any international oversight.

Wonder why Indians are so much interested in Bangladesh affairs? Wasn't he something close to 19 during the liberation War, how can someone that young perform such atrocities. But then again we South Asians do have a habit of subtracting a few years from our real age.

Hasina thinks that by hanging and suspiciously vanishing opposition leaders will help her to stay at power. But she actually is doing Jamaat a favour. No more can she or any Awami League leaders brand them as "Razakars", since they have hanged all of them and will take away the only thing they can say to stop people from supporting Jamaat.

Also the War was in 1971 not 1972.

Good for Bangladesh ... These jamati deserve only this.

These jamati terrorists are even thread for Indian security as well, we should help Bangladesh to wipe them out.

they are heroes because they volunteered in various humanitarian assistance in 1971. they are razakars because razakar means volunteer.

Sheikh Mujib was also a Pakistan patriot and was against Indian invasion.

the real reason they are being persecuted is that they opposed and still oppose Indian take over of sovereign East Pakistan/BD. India wants to make sure that there is no major opposition to the historical 1971 Indian invasion and hence the ongoing hegemony.
